Nesting Apple Boxes

Probably true since it is not reinforced inside. If one was simply to use that full apple for light duty like placing small objects, non-load bearing applications, it could work out but you would definitely want a standard apple box as well, so at that point I'm not sure about the point. You wouldn't be saving space, but I guess easier to carry by hand?

Apple boxes are standardized in size so I would find it confusing to incorporate a non-standard set. You couldn't tape together the full and the half for instance.

My input is that unless you pick up and carry the nest with two hands, 100% of the time the detachable door will come off. Sometimes hilariously spilling the other boxes depending on which way the thing is oriented.

Ha, that's what I've heard. I messaged the maker of these in hopes that he's not using magnets for the lid....

Although it would be heavy, I'd assume if I was only in need of the full apple for a set up, I'd just leave it nested and thus it would have the inside support it needs? I guess things could get hairy if we needed to use them all at once, but typically the only time I use a full apple is either for me to sit on New York style or to put a very short person (and usually light weight) on one.

It looks like the endcap latches. Take a look at the second picture where it looks like there are finger holes to slide something to each side. That could solve my concern that the loose endcap makes for a side that is eventually going to loosen and weaken as there is no support to prevent the box from twisting.

They need to market better. No Youtube videos, no reviews. I can't find a website or facebook page.

It's a father and son team from the Sacramento area.

The ones I've used are not magnetized...it's some kind of simple system where little nubbins on the removable part stick out and are kind of "forced" (by pressing the lid to close or pulling to open) into corresponding holes on the box (I'm sure there's some more technical engineering term for this but, alas, I am not an engineer), but it's made to come out fairly easily and overachieves.

I've heard mixed reviews on using Nesting Apple Boxes - great idea, but not the most convenient execution in practice. Wanted to get your opinions on them if you've used them. I'm often packing gear into my SUV and would love to save as much space as possible in my car and on my camera cart.

I'm specifically looking at these handmade ones on Etsy:

Pass on them. Gimmicky. Nested they are heavy. And 95%+ of the time you'll only use the full. When you only want the full apple you have to take the others out of the full or use it weighing over twice what a normal full apple weighs.

Depends.... When I rearranged my Sprinter van I switched from full sets of apple boxes which took up a huge amount of space to well constructed nesting boxes. This allowed me to have items in the van which I didn't have space for before. Mind you my van is not a typical grip truck. It is more of a personal production vehicle. So I tend to configure it as needed per shoot. FWIW I have had zero issues with the nesting boxes in a 98% typical use scenario. In the other 2% I'll just load the full sets. Simple as that.

I have two sets of nesting and a normal full set. I bought the nesting sets with the idea that I could save space and still carry apple boxes. The nesting set is heavy and not as easy to carry. The sets I have, while well made are just slightly bigger(the full) than regular apple boxes. You would never see it with the naked eye, but I have a seat/pad that slips over a full apple and it will not fit over either nesting set. We’re talking fractions of an inch. Almost like a heavy sanding could bring them “in spec”.

Anyway, I never carry them. Unless I’m going into a shoot where I KNOW that I will need apple boxes, they stay in storage, because they still take up too much space in my truck to carry everyday on everyday shoots.

Hmmm great insights here, thanks. The more I think about it the more I'm talking myself out of getting a nesting set. When I think of 95% of my use cases in the past it's either a full apple for me to sit on because there's no chairs or when shooting two people on camera at the same time that have drastic height differences (in which case a full apple is unnaturally too much of a change). I could probably get by with a regular full apple and two 1/4 apples for smaller adjustments for 95% of my uses and that would not take up much extra space.

Well the nesting boxes are heavy if you carry them as a single entity. but no heavier than a full set of apple boxes. I just grab what I need, the same way I would with normal boxes.

Pass. Someone on your set will put a load on them and they will break. Can't beat traditional.
I've downsized almost all of my G&L but still keep two full sets of traditional, plywood, heavy duty Apples.
To me, they're like the C-Stand. You start getting cute with Aluminum instead steel, 2/3 sized, whatever deviates from a traditional C-stand and they are junk.

I drive a Corolla and I can easily fit all of my G&L including four C-stands, lighting cases, Rock & Roller, set of Apples into the trunk and back seat. Yeah, they're bulky but when you need them, you need them.
I definitely don't bring them to every shoot.
