neewer 160 led - preferred battery/ac supply?

i'm in need of a z96 type small battery powered led light to use as a small interview hair/back/side light.

i happened across the neewer 160:

http://www.amazon.com/LED-CN-160-Dimmable-Camcorder-Panasonic/dp/B004TJ6JH6/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

anyone ever use the 160?

i know i can power with 4xAA but wondered if having a cheap sony style battery pays?

(i already have a sony np-f series charger from my sony fs100 kit)

also what do folks us to ac power this type of a unit?

thanks in advance to those who care to share.

be well.

z96 is brighter than cn-160. this 160 led light is not a new one. it support aa batteries, sony np-f series batteries and panasonic CGR-D16S rechargeable battery. as the price, also nice. But I like z96 more.

Really? Do you have a test confirming this? The 160 and 170 are pretty bright (I use the 170 as an on-camera light and it's brighter than my 65w tungsten on-camera light), it seems odd that a little over half as many LED's could produce even more light. I know it does have a wider beam spread without that nasty looking falloff though.

Both CN160 and Z96 delivers 800lux per 1 meter distance. Z96 has better construction built. The orange filter of CN160 is un-usuable. It's too orange makes everybody look like they are sick =)

taky-

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

i've read in other postings that the filter on many of thsee led light packages are less than useable.

but i'm asking about the quality of the light.

i'd me more than happy to fashion my own version of a proper gel if i thought one light was substantially better than the other.

lastly, i know that taky/la color wedding, sells the highly recommended comer light.

unfortunately, the comer might be too much light (is there really such a thing!) and a bit more than i want to spend.

be well.

Rob, I have and used both Z96 and CN160 before.. If you can make your own gel, then CN160 would be great because, in general, CN160 is cheaper than Z96.

Anyhow, these 2 lights together with Comer lights all have dimmer. I never experienced a time I complain too much light (I can always use dim it down) but I always want to have more light instead =)

yes, z96 is brighter than cn-160 although z96 comes with only 96 leds.

As I've said before, LEE 108 and 152 are perfect warming filters for the CN-170 and probably for the 160 as well. 152 gets me down to around 3700°K. I don't have a sheet of 108 but I've white balanced off the face of the light through the 108 swatch and it put me right around 3200°K. The transmission graphs are very similar, 108 is just a bit stronger.

Sounds very tempting. Do you know if it can run off of the largest of the Panasonic batteries (CGA-D54 I think? The DVXuser batteries).

z96 is compact and the magnet filters are very nice. For qulity, z96 is also better. cn160 is a little cheap than z96.

I just check the spec on both lights. CN-160 is brighter. It is 900 lux per 1 meter. Z96 is 800 lux at the same distance.

Both were not diffused at 5600K Day light color temperature by default. when diffused, or using the included orange filter, z96 will function better in real life.

The CN-160 is brighter than the Z96...I have both and don't believe anyone who says differant. The latest CN-160 (actually called the TTV-160 on the light itself) has a 5mm AC jack on the back that you can power with a 7.5 v adapter (as does the Z96 with a 9 or 12 v?). There are several iterations of the CN-160 floating around (some also called TTV-160) so don't exepct to see that jack on the other models. I also have the older model of the CN-160 that isn't stackable, the new version is much better and much more solid build. Besides the Z96 I also have the YN-160 which has useless barndoors (makes lines on the walls) but has a nice lightstand adapter. The CN-160 orange filter is useless (use a 1/2 CTO instead). The Z96 is overpriced IMHO.

The battery on a CN-160 will last about 2 hours and 20 mins with a Sony NP-550 fully charged.
