Job is in Seattle, WA. (more specifically Enumclaw) needing a second unit cameraman with his own Panasonic AGDVX100A. You will be paid $500 per week, for 2 weeks. 1st week is out doors, 2nd week is on soundstage. Must be punctual and be easily directed by the DP, or can immulate our storyboards. Check out the film premise and trailer at www.fasttrackproductions.biz. We do have name actors attached, it will be a SAG shoot. Thanks

I always though a SAG shoot meant IATSE also. Whatever happened to union solidarity?

And I am curious aboutthe typo. Does immulate really mean immolate or emulate? I can immolate storyboads, sounds like fun.

$500 a week sounds like a hosing for a union shoot.. 1st rule of making a film should be if your going to pay some people properly than you should pay the others the same way... I mean unless it's for only a couple hours a day? but for a camera and operator ( I mean try even renting the camera for that much)

I agree with Nick Adams, there's no way in hell you'd even get the cam for that much. I understand it's second unit, but come on.

Hmmm. This is my first posting on this site. I must say, I am disappointed that we have a 50/50 split of those willing to help, and become a productive member of a group who is trying to do something, and the other half are just flaming. I found that to be true in other sites (of a different nature) but I didn't think that would be the case in my beloved film community.

I am sooooo sorry I that I didn't spell check... a thousand apologies. :embarasse

Ignore the flamers. Forgive the thread hi-jackers.
At least you are willing to pay "something".
That's what matters.
Whether it's Union or Sag or aftra or whatever-the-hell organization it is your film is being represented by, the fact is, it's paying enough to pay for someone's rent for a month, and not some "Show up all day I'll buy you dinner and a 6-pack of beer" type of gig.

I'm giving your thread a bump for the 9 million+ unemployed American workforce we have today.

That is the same reaction I have gotten from every other position I have hired. From the Producer to the PA's. Too bad the Hateration has creeped in.

Sorry if I offended you. I was really trying to learn about the SAG/IATSE issue.

And as for the spelling thing, I knew what you meant. But the alternative (immolate) struck me funny when I was posting at 5am, but smileys don't work for me since the upgrade and no one can tell me why. Smileys are a critical part of using a forum (especially with my dry sense of humor). [insert apologetic/contrite smiley face here].

Scott:

I like almost everyone in here often work for free and lend assistance to other indie projects, in fact this weekend I'm donating shooting time and editing for someone who wouldn't be able to have their project filmed because of budget issue's..... I think your quick to shoot out " Too bad the Hateration has creeped in" on a couple of post's asking the question about paying people properly;

I think that if you outright stated that were trying to achieve something and although limited in funding, were able to compensate with $500 per week.... that would be a different story.... being new I think if were to spend some time on this board you would find that almost all to be not only very helpful but quick to go out of the way for a fellow filmmaker.

P.S. Welcome to the Hateration:thumbsup:

ya know, $500 per week is junk, no matter how you slice it. SAG and IATSE rates are higher by alot, even on low, low, low budgets. This isn't about helping someone out, if they are paying
SAG rates, they can pay a camera operator AND rent his equipment. I wouldn't unpack my equipment for $500 a week, and of course that doesn't pay the rent! It is a minimum of $250 a day just for the camera and tripod, $750 a week, so get off your wallet.

Thank You Nick & Galt, for your positive replies. I think we have all done our fair share of helping friends for free. We were fortunate enough to find someone who was able to give us some limited funding. My crew will receive the largest portion of that money. The reason we are shooting SAG is because that is what our "Name" actors are, not because we are a huge production, and most of them are getting paid deferred as well as paying their way to get up here. I have opted out of receiving any of this money, in order to bring on this second unit camera, and a better audio person, so I have gotten off of my wallet. And $1000 WILL pay rent in Seattle, as well as some groceries, electric bill, gas for the drive..... :cheesy:

There, my rant is over. I have found my cameraman, and he is happy. So am I. Now it's off to make my picture. Thanks for the memories.

You are right, smilies make a big difference in your tone!

Perhaps my reaction was fueled by the fact that I recently got burned on a gig that I helped out on for free. The guys ended up being total asses, when I provided TONS of equiptment and countless hours to their production.

Good luck on the project.

that sucks TC...

if it had been me... I would have politely said "**** you" and taken my equipment and left.. up stream without a paddle.

people take advantage of others when they have something they want..

I have to agree, at least you're paying something.
Also agreed the only way you'll get someone with a DVX for $500 a week is IF they own it. You can't rent it for that.
If these are 5 day weeks then it's on par for a lot of low budget films I've worked in the last few years.
Please keep me in mind if you're ever shooting in Nashville, TN or Birmingham, AL. If not otherwise booked and I like your script I'll be interested. I've worked MANY projects where there was WGA, DGA, SAG & Teamster representation and NO IATSE representation.

I've also found myself working for rates that I haven't worked for in 10 years over the last 2 years. The playing field is changing. IF we want to keep production from going out of the country then we're going to end up taking the hit and/or our states are going to be giving away incentives.

Let's have our own solidarity in the indie world and help each other out.

If any of you have done the SAG Low budget deal you'll know you actually get them pretty cheap for the shoot.
It's once you sell it that they get all of your money and you and the crew don't see your deferrals/points.
It IS their faces/acting that sells the film not the brilliant directing or innovative camera work/lighting. . .

So, just becasue the show is SAG doesn't mean that the actors are getting "full scale" for the shoot.
