Needed: Special Effects Guy

[Lynos]

Hey guys

I'm in early development on a feature that calls for some extensive special effects sequences, both CGI and in-camera. Since neither me nor my production partner have any experience with this type of thing we thought of recruiting a special effects guy at this early stage who will be able to help us break down those sequences and figure out the budget requirements.

My question: Do you know of any place online where, for lack of a better term, special effects guys hang out? We can't recruit someone from ILM but we're looking for someone who is a pro, who did some work on features, and is looking to get upgraded to a supervisor, and maybe producer, on this project. If anyone here has experience with special effects I would like to know what's the best way to find such a person (we're located in Ontario, Canada).

Thanks!

You might want to look at http://www.cgchannel.com/ and http://www.cgsociety.org/ but I suspect your going to have a hard time finding someone that meets your requirements from online forums. If your serious and have the funding you would be better off hiring an actual vfx shop, which will give you the experienced supervisor and a crew to go with them. Toronto has a number of shops listed here http://www.3dcanada.ca/r-cgcompanies.html

Thanks for the links.

As far as funding goes, it's a chicken-and-egg situation. We're aware that it'll be hard to get an sfx person aboard without a budget, but in order to figure out the budget, we need an sfx person aboard....
