Need your help with Pan & Tilt Heads

I am looking for a pan/tilt head capable of being controlled from at least 200', handle 6-10 Lbs, and be fast (15-30 degrees per second and up).
What do you guys use? I need 3-6 so must be priced modestly. prefered to work over Cat-5 cable. But I would take a look at any at this point.
Thank you in advance: Alb.

Yeah I have taken a good look at them but they do not cut it for the simple reason that the controller does not have the hollow effect. in other words when you pan to the left and let go of the joystick the camera comes back right where it was. it does not stay. at least that is what people say. even themselves say they are working on it.
thank you Jason.
Have you used them? do you own one?

lol, if you remove the springs it does not do that, I use one on my moco and bypass the remote and use my computer. but yea without the springs the remote stays where you put it. its a nice set up

Hey guys...
If i may throw a question here under this discusion... Iv just bought the latest Pan and Tilt System from ServoCity and have realized it isn't going to work with the 4 servo channel record playblack programmer that i also got. If anyone has some exprience with the new Pan\Tilt system and the 4 channel servo controller, can you assist me?
The new Pan tilt system works of using Stepper motors and do not run off servo signal (pulsewidth modulation). The pan and tilt Stepper Motors on the new system only have two curcuits that drive the 2 stepper motors, not like a servomotor.
What im mainly wanting to do is use my 4 channel servo record and playback programer together with the pan tilt system.
Thanks in advance.

Why 200 feet ??? sounds like security type controllers and or Cameras that run on Cat 5 try

I have setup cameras a thousand feet away with full PTZ and focus using the newer series 3

Yep... Thats true. They only have two versions. But, i asked them awhile ago about there 985 series and they informed me that there will be a 3rd series just about to be released. This is was 2 months ago. About 3 weeks ago there started to ship out the new 3rd series. It costs US$999. To inform you of the difference between the 985 system and the new unit, I have copied the "blurb" that they are sending to potential customers.
The 985 series pan/tilt is an excellent unit, however there are drawbacks in some uses. If you are controlling the unit by PC or need it to repeat recorded motions over and over, it will do this very accurately. It is considered a closed loop feedback system, meaning that the motors basically know what position they are in and how far from "center" they are. Therefore, when you release the joystick, it will center itself rather than stay in the position that you left it in.

If you are in need of an open loop system, we have one in the works that is to be released very soon. This is a more typical unit; when you release the joystick, it will stay in position rather than self-center. It will be extremely smooth, powerful and quiet; ideal for high-end videography work. The new unit will also be available with a roll feature if you are in need of 3-axis motion. (I havent seen any feature with this option with the new unit, and they didnt offer it to me.)

As for the details, the new pan/tilt will be a very solid, single sided structure that is able to be stood on without flexing. It utilizes 1" ball bearings and stainless steel shafts to allow all the camera wires and cables to be routed through the points of rotation so that they will not tangle. The pan/tilt is connected to the master control board via BNC cables. The master board can control up to 4 motors (you will have 2 open ports when using a pan/tilt). This allows for the possibitility of zoom control, focus control, iris control or even dolly control. The joystick is connected to the master board via RJ11 cable and can also control up to 4 motors. The movement of the joystick controls the pan/tilt at an exponential rate; move the stick a little bit and it will barely creep; move the stick a lot and the speed ramps up exponentially.

I have done a lot of testing on the system and I can tell you that it is very quiet, smooth and powerful. We are testing with an XL-1 camera but I would not be afraid to put a 40lb camera on the pan/tilt as it would move it just fine. The sales team is offering this system for an introductory rate of $999.99. If you want to place an order, the system does not yet have a part number, however they will know what you are referring to.

So.. back to my original question... Iv just realized maybe a speed controller would work from the 4 servo channel Record Playback Programmer operating a 2 curcuit moter. Has anybody tried this board not using servo moters?

I feel this topic is totaly needing a new thread with the new series of Pan Tilt heads that ServoCity has. I knew the new series would be alot better then the 985. So i just trusted the comments about it with out any pics and went for it. Soon im sure there website will be updated.

viper thanks for the additional info, I have been considering one of these for a while and it sounds like the new version is more along the lines of what I am looking for. I too would like to figure out how to make this provide motion control so I can have repeatable movement.

If the new system does not use pulse width servo control then what type of signal is sent down the wire to control the motors ?

vipermesh: Have you yet received the new pan/tilt system? I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts of it. Would it be possible to control the head with a computer to do repeatable motion control shots, or even motion control time lapse shots. I've been planning a head which utilizes stepper motors and a reducer worm gear drive but this route seems so complicated that I'd be pleased if something like this could work.
