Need video off dvd.

I know why people dont use the search function on most sites. You either get no results, or 5million that don't relate. I have seen this asked before on many sites, but here we go again. I have done this before by pulling vob files off dvd into vegas and rendering mpeg2 back to avi. Want to avoid this loooooong process this time. Need to get avi to edit in p.pro1.5. How can I do it? Any programs? Any simpler processes? Don't you luv it when a person hands you footage on a dvd for you to edit. Any help appreciated, thank you.

There's no simpler processes. MPEG2 (or .vob) is final 'container' and 3...5 times more compressed than DV .avi.
MPEG2 is very hard to edit, only few programs can do this correctly, Womble MPEG Video Wizard for example. Unfortunately this program is too 'simple' compared to Premiere.
Problem is that MPEG2 has keyframes (I-frames) approx. every half second but DV .avi has ONLY keyframes and this makes .avi highly editable.

Why you say 'long process'?
MPEG2 -> AVI conversion takes usually 1:1
30min footage converts 30minutes. Depends what converter and computer's power. Not so long at all, I think.

And...footage on DVD has always less quality than original DV .avi simply because it's more compressed. DV-quality video takes 13GB per hour...so one 4,3GB DVD disc can hold only 20min.
If this 'person' gives you DVD with DV .avi then OK, if MPEG2 (or .vob) files then further quality loss is what you get because of conversion.

Remember, DVD-Video is FINAL footage and not even ment for further editing.

*sorry my bad english, hope you understood my point*

i have my dvd/recorder connected to my mojo i just send the out to the in of the mojo and capture it as i would capture video off of tape and works just as good.

Yeah I know all about compression, Like I said I did it before, and actually had to render back to mpeg after editing, arghhhh. Actually have to do that on this project too, yes I know...this will result in even more quality loss. For my computer vegas takes forever to render. One of the reasons I don't use it much. But thanks for the suggestions and info gentlemen, I'll try the mpeg streamclip.

Well I tried stream clip and it worked on one vob file. On the other vob files it consistently crashed, saying there was an error and had to close. Before it crashed it said there were more than 1 file streams related to that vob file, I chose both routes (download just the one file) and (download all files in that vob stream) streamclip crashed both ways.

Now get this...I go the vegas 6 route get all vob files transferred to avi, then I look at the dvd and I'm missing alot of footage thats on the dvd. But I have transferred all vob files.

I'm thinking those extra streams that streamclip caught was those extra files.
Soooo I still need alternative suggestions. Something like streamclip, but wont crash on me. Any suggestions appreciated.

You can try program called VobMerge. Like name says, it merges these 2GB .vob files together to one big .vob
Then encode with Streamclip

For future reference----O.k. streamclip was operator error. It works great. Just that there were timecode breaks. I didnt fix them(under edit menu--fix timecode breaks) So it would stop at first timecode break.

Only negative thing is it doesnt work if you have quicktime 7(free). Either you have to downgrade to quicktime alternative 1.6.1 or higher, or you have to buy the mpeg component for quicktime 7.

Thanks for the help all.
