Anyone recommend a good stable 'pod that won't break the bank. I need to realistically load 40 or so pounds on the sucker without a glitch. Can I expect to get something for under $1K ?

I guess the weakest point is the pan head, so maybe I should just get a really good pan head. What do you think?

For under 1k, I think you'll be able to get a tripod that can handle 40 pounds, but as far as a head that can balance 40 pounds, that alone would cost over 1k. The bogen 316 head can support around 35 pounds, but the head alone is around 700 bucks, not leaving a whole lot left over for thr tripod...and that is the cheapest head that *I* know of that will support close to 40 pounds.....

I think it will be hard to find something that meets your criteria for under $1000. 40lbs is a lot for your average, cheap DV type support system. My favorite head for an application like this is Sachtler's System 20. 40+lb support at the head, nice carbon fiber sticks. This is perfect for someone who needs a set of sticks that will work between a cine built DVX, a S16mm, and Lightly built 35mm cameras. Hope this helps
