Need URGENT help mixing 30p footage and 24p......preferably in a 24p timeline

I know this has probably been asked before, but i just wanna see what people have done in vegas that works for them.

Sadly i accidentally had the 30p on for a few clips during an interview type shoot. Although it was just a few clips, they are crucial and can't be re-shot. I've heard its better to conform 24p to 30p, but obviously id like to render out in 24p.......so what is the best way to conform 30p to a 24p timeline?

My process is shooting in h264, then using neoscene to create the cineform avi intermediate before loading into vegas.....i use vegas pro9.

Your input and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is no good way in vegas. 30p to 24p means your footage will be jerky. Every 5th frame will be dropped, and there will be a gap in motion. 24p to 30p is just as bad. Every inserted 5th frame will be a duplicate or blended frame if you use vegas - choppy as well .

A better way, but still not ideal, is to use motion interpolation to 120p then divide by 4 to get 30 (or divide by 5 to get 24). This way, every frame is evenly spaced apart and motion is smooth, because of evenly divisible numbers.

Twixtor, After Effects, Nuke, Motion, Avisynth are all ways to do motion interpolation. But this can have side effects like morphing edge artifacts, and can be slow to process

You don't want to hear this, but the best way is to reshoot

There's no good way to convert 30p to 24p in anything, not just Vegas.

You may want to try editing as 60p. Both 24p and 30p do fine. They may be noticeably different, but they won't be compromised.

so you are saying just drop the files into a 60p timeline?......excuse my novice brain...lol......but just simply pick the 1920x108060p template in project properties?.........anyways......how will "they" be noticeably different?......and how would i render out?.......could i then render out to 30p or 24p?.........essentially the end product will be youtube/vimeo and dvd

Unfortunately we cannot reshoot......wish we could but cannot.

thanks alot

im guessing this is the best avenue for me, but what is the quality loss is it acceptable? and will the 24p and 30p appear the same (to the naked eye)

The difference in your results will be based upon what resample settings you choose

1) smart resample on, means vegas will interpolate using 50/50 blends
2) smart resample off, means vegas will interpolate either dropping frames (if going to a lower FPS) or adding duplicates (going to higher FPS)

30p to 24p export, regardless of timeline settings, you're left with the same problems: you're left with either blurry strobey footage with blends, or choppy footage with dropped frames

For interview type footage, you might get away with smart resample off, using dropped frames since there shouldn't be much motion. IMO it would be the lesser of the 2 evils if you limit yourself to vegas . So try it out yourself and see what looks better

If most of your footage is 30p you might stay with a 30p project, or if most of it was 24p, then you might stick with 24p. This means less footage to look bad. Or decide on a look you want. 24p cadence might not be desireable for interview content for example (or it might be, depends on your project)

What i would get from "The motion will be slightly different" is one seems more "videoish" than the other. If that is the case, i could live with that. I hope you aren't referring to shuddering. I assume it wont affect the audio sinc which was done separately.

Sync won't be affected .

If you decide on 30p, then 1sec of time is represented by 30 frames . If you decide on 24p, then 1 sec of time is represented by 24 frames. Eitherway 1 second is 1 second

Yes, the motion is different for 30p vs. 24p . 30p is smoother if shot at 30p. But if that was derived from 24p content, then you're either going to get strobey, blurry frames, or choppy duplicates

well since there are only like 3 shots in 30p, what would be the best case scenario for the 30p conformed to 24p in vegas or would they be choppy as well.

and i thought we decided on a 60p timeline/ouput....lol

Timeline and export settings are 2 different things

DVD doesn't support 60p. Youtube doesn't support 60p . So exporting 60p isn't really an option for you, nor does it make any sense, since your source footage is 24p and 30p

well since there are only like 3 shots in 30p, what would be the best case scenario for the 30p conformed to 24p in vegas or would they be choppy as well.

If the majority of footage is 24p, I would use 24p export.

30p to 24p will have the adverse effects described earlier, according to the resample settings you choose

Is there nothing that i can do within neo scene?......or for that matter another budget friendly software?

Neo scene doesn't do motion interpolation, it's primary function is to encode to digital intermediate for easier editing

As mentioned earlier, there is no good way to "fix" in post. They all have drawbacks. Best way is to shoot at the proper framerate in the first place

The third way is motion interpolation. Usually it produces better results. A free way to do that is in avisynth , but there is a learning curve, and it requires basic scripting knowledge. Otherwise you can buy twixtor plugin (I think it's available for vegas now) , or After Effects can do pixel motion, or timewarp.

thanks for all the advice, ill do some tests regarding all the suggestions. But yes, my bad....lol....was just assuming i had my normal 24p switched on.

Anyways thanks again
