Need to upgrade?

I've had After Effects 6.5 for almost year now and I've been studying the videocopilot tutorials and I'm still confused on just the basics, and I think I'm missing some key componets that they use in the tutorial on the site. Do I need to upgrade? Would it make a difference? thanks

if you can upgrade. the jump from 6.5 > cs3 is great! Im sure you can get a deal on CS3 now that CS4 is out.
