Hey all, you might be able to help with a question I've been mulling over...
Recently I was passed up on a low budget feature DP job, since the DP they chose owns a RED Epic kit....and at their budget they just could not justify bringing me on and spending the extra cash for a rental.
I'd love to be in a place like big time DP's that don't need to own a kit as they are working with budgets that an Alexa and master prime rental being one of the lesser costs of the production...but it seems to me that I've lost a good deal of narrative work lately due to this. These are all on films below a 150k budget.
I already own an FS-100 kit, which has been a workhorse for web and marketing videos...BUT would it be smart of me to go in for a Scarlet later this year? I'd love an Epic, but I don't think I can justify the 60k cost....while the Scarlet could pay for itself within the first year of ownership.
I would end up making this final decision after NAB since there's always something better looming on the horizon. Could any current Scarlet owners give me their impressions of the camera. I'm not a RED fanboy by any means, so I figure this is a question better posed here than reduser where the kool-aid goes down a little too easy. But as they say the best camera is the camera you can buy NOW.
So Scarlet yea or nea? What is the backorder delivery estimates? I'm assuming that FCP 7 can't handle 2k footage...so I would likely have to go over to another NLE as well...
Sorry for the rambling questions, if anyone has any insight I would be happy to hear it.
