need to light dark scene help.

First off you should know we will be using the HVX200 with a redrock m2 and micro flip adapter so we will need special lighting needs. Heres the detailed scenario power goes off on a rainy night with allot of mystery because the audience knows something is going on but isnt sure what. Thats really the best I can do for explaining. Its in an old house in modern times. Im considering having the director add candles into the scene to make it a little easier.

also whats the best way to fake lighting? Would it to be to shoot it over exposed with ctb's and then cut to that from black?

It depends on the mood you want. Think about possible sources of light in real life. Candles, moonlight, flashlights, etc. Now, how can you recreate those artificially?

Strong light through the windows from high up with CTB for moonlight. Soft warm light on a dimmer for candles. Strong flashlight for a flashlight. You get the idea. Many many many options.

Have you considered having a PA hold some prop greens and wave it in front of the light to simulate trees blowing across the blue light. This will in effect create more of a storm effect. Then add storm sounds in post and that will create the feeling. In addition. You might wet down the window so it will enhance feeling of the storm.

You could also use some flashes to simulate lightings. That could be used to reveal something. Lighting....nothing......lighting.......bum...there it is..... or something like that. Then as smithy said fake the moonlight and move some tree branches in front of the light.
