Need to find or make prop "perscription pills" / drugs for short film

Hi there everyone!

I'm currently doing some production design for a short film which revolves around a story of drug addiction. Becuase of this, I am working on finding a suitable fake pill substitute that can be manipulated (and ingested) in all the ways that a regular perscription pill could. I am attempting to avoid buying a pill press, as that would cut heavily into the budget. Currently I am considering buying multi-vitamins and dying them, but I wanted to check in here and see if anyone had advice in these matters. It would be ideal if someone could point me in the direction of a prop / fx store that sells fake pills, etc.

Good if you're character is hooked on mdma or other hard drugs that you ingest. Just fill them with brown sugar and you're good to go.

If you want something that looks like pain meds or oxy's check out a gimmick shop or a place that sells sex games and drug paraphernalia. They usually have bottles of sugar pills with dumb names like Horse Tranquilizers and Dong Enlarger
 
The vitamin/supplement shelf at your supermarket would be the easiest and cheapest option - they come in a variety of colours and sizes and pills/tablets.
 
Thanks you guys. I'm looking into both of those! I just can't imagine that professional films / tv shows use these avenues. They must have a supplier for all sorts of fake medication-- I'll try to post my progress later in case this thread becomes useful for anyone else.
 
Oh definitely - there must be professional film industry suppliers of fake pills in various shapes and colours. But such pills are probably way more expensive or difficult to get than Vitamin B from the supermarket.

But yes, do post if you find some suitable suppliers - I can totally see that a particular film might have very precise pill appearance requirements, in which case a supplier could be the best solution.
 
Careful with the vitamins as anything taken in large enough doses can do real damage. Even vitamins. Taking one or two shouldn't be an issue, but if you think you might need more takes, then go with sugar pills or some other placebo. The other thing you can do is use real looking drugs for the closeups, but anytime someone is actually taking one, they just pop a mint instead. At anything less than closeup, and even closeup with blocking, the viewer won't know the difference.
