Need to edit 24 footage in 30 timeline. Best way??

Here's the deal.

The producer just gave me a terabyte HD with 20 mini DV tapes logged onto it.

5 of those tapes were shot in 24PA mode, and the rest 30P.

So... I have the footage already logged with pulldown NOT removed.

I could either:

use nattress standards conversion's "G advanced pulldown converter" which will convert the clips. But I'd have to cut up the tape at every start/stop recording, find the double frame, apply filter. What does this do? how does it smooth out the footage?

Or I could remove pulldown on all the clips using compressor or cinema tools, then use nattress's "add pulldown" to get back up to 29.97. How exactly does this work? what does it add? a duplicate frame?

Which would give me better results? anyone use these before?

any other ideas much appreciated. No... getting the tapes from the producer, and re-logging, is not an option at this point.

Keep the pulldown- if you're not going out to film or 24p DVD it will work a lot better left intact.

You mean just edit as usual and leave the footage as is? then I get the choppy look of the duplicate frame, right?

Or do you mean use nattress's "pulldown converter"?

thanks for the quick response, by the way

I would remove the pulldown with compressor. Compressor is very good with reading the cadence and removing the pulldown.

FCP should add a 2:3 pulldown back in when editing in a 29.97 timeline by default. You could also try adding a 2:3 pulldown to the footage in Compressor, essentially turning into 24p (not advanced).

Thanks boys... I'll give it a try.

EDIT: how do I add the 2:3 back in??

I would've thought Compressor could add a pulldown while doing a framerate conversion. I'm at work so I can't get too far into it right now.

A quick look at the FCP and Cinema Tools pdf's show that neither will add pulldown until output. I believe that FCP will automatically add a standard pulldown if you put the clip in a 29.97 sequence. Although you may need to render the clips.

If you lay them in and render, you should be able to move frame-by-frame and see if it is indeed adding the pulldown or if it's blending frames.

I'd really do a test- there's no reason to remove the pulldown if you're planning to use a 29.97 timeline. In fact it's required.
