Need some help

I don't know which thread this should go in but I would appreciate some input. I am wrapping up the edit for a film I shot a couple months ago. Originally we expected it to be around 25-30 minutes. However, we are nearing our picture lock and are easily sitting around 38 minutes. In festivals that I have looked at the feature cutoff is at 40 minutes a lot of the time. We could easily obtain this after credits and whatnot, but I want to know if being over/under 40 minutes will make much of a difference.

I don't want to base the length of the film on whether or not I want it to be considered a feature in festivals, but at the same time I am curious if there are any advantages to either side.

Shorter is better. Really.

Get someone from outside the production to make a new version of your cut, but with the mandate that you want it a lot shorter. Tell them "just keep the important stuff."
You don't need to use their cut. When you see how much they are able to take out, you will be shocked. There will be a few things that you want to put back, but many things will be missed less than you think. Either augment their cut or reduce your cut.

The crucial idea is to get outside eyes to cut the film to the bone.

Well the guy I did it with won't let anyone else touch it so I doubt large portions will get cut out. Believe me if it were up to me I would not be editing this, I would leave it to someone who is better at that craft.

We are probably going to hover around the high 30's low 40's and that 40 minute mark will probably depend on how long our credits roll
