Need some help.

Looking to rock a montage-like opening similar to MOULIN ROUGE's opening sequence.

Anyone know a place to find a tut on something like that?

Hey Rod. 2 questions:

Can you locate a link to the opening so we can see it?

What software do you have available to work on it?

Here's a trailer that has some of the 'intro', especially the 'Paris cityscape flyover'.

Here's another that has a little bit of the intro, the old time movie look. You have to really quickly notice the small figure at the podium, like he is in front of the movie screen with the caption "Paris, 1900". The virtual camera 'flies' into the virtual Paris cityscape.

Don't know exactly what Rod is after, whether it is just the first shot, which is of a theater proscenium with the curtain closed, then the curtains are drawn aside and as I recall the camera flies through to the virtual world beyond. The Trailer does not have the full intro sequence. It is highly abreviated...

The Wife has been wanting me to do something like the curtains being drawn aside, and I only recently found out, well 3 months ago..., how to work with 'cloth' in Blender...

The flyover is specifically what I was looking for. Would this be a simple Z-Space stack and row in AE?

I looked at the intro sequence last night, but I got distracted by what model Underwood was used... looks to be a Underwood No. 5, and as such, had 'just come out' in 1900... so the 'poor starving child of the Revolution' was affluent enough to get one of the first hot Underwood No. 5 model... in Paris France...

But the sequence where John Leguizamo is standing, singing the intro song, that looks to be a live action set in a 3-d model. The 'flat' appartment house roof/attic with windows could be an AE composition.

I'm going to look further tonight, because I'm thinking about major compositing if I enter anything into the West Fest.

Update:
Looked at the intro again, turned on the comentary.

1) The initial set with Leguizamo, is part pratical composited with a miniature model of the 'appartment house'.
2) The fly over the cityscape, is a 3-d model.
3) The fly through the narrow backstreets into the Montmartre 'gate' and beyond. Miniature model, with 'greenscreened' people dropped in.
4) The Moulin Rouge court yard. Some miniature, some full scale, people greenscreened and dropped in against the miniatures.

--------

I reall don't know how far, or well, but here is my (re)inspiration...

And here's the 'making of':

Way down on the "Making of" comment page, these are the tools listed:

After Effects, Maya, Mental Ray, Blastcode, 3dsmax, Vray.

I have AE, and Blender... so I'll see what I can do... provided time available...
