Need some help with night indoors lighting

Hey just something i need a little help on, if i could pick anyone's brains here.

Basically i'm gonna be shooting a trailer for a play, and the play in question is 'Black Comedy'. For those who haven't heard of it, it basically occurs over the period of time after dinner where there's a complete blackout, and the guy needs to impress his girlfriend's father. We'll be shooting it like a film, rather than as a play, so here's the issue: How should i go about lighting a scene that should be in complete darkness? From what i've learnt i'm thinking i should put a big strong light at the windows, and preferably put a cookie to imitate blinds. I'll also need to heavily blue gel and diffuse the window light. But thats the only light source i can think of - I mean normally you should light by amplifying the available light sources. However in this case the only real 'light source' is the window. Would any other lights be necessary? How would they come into play to offset the strong lighting from just the window?

The budget's pretty low...like prohibitively low. As far as lighting goes I was thinking of getting a 1000 watt worklight as the 'big' light source and gel that with diffusion and blue filters, and then renting a redhead and the dedolight from here: http://www.digitalrentals.com.sg/LightingEquipment.htm

Any info or advice at all would be much appreciated!
