Need some help importing files

Hey All,

I have a company that shot footage for me on an HVX200. The have imported all the files into an AVID are are trying to deliver files to me (On my PC).

The first thing we tried was having them export uncompressed AVI's. They couldn't export anything over 4 GB, so this did not work as the footage was much longer than that.

Next we tried having them export uncompressed .MOV files. When the files got here they imported into Vegas, but are not 1280x720, instead they all show up as 960x720 with everything being squeezed. If I set the project to 1280x720 and then set the clips to not maintain aspect ration then they look correct, but I assume I am losing resolution doing this. BTW - if I open these files in QT they look correct...so I assume that QT is doing some kind of stretch on them.

So what gives? What is the proper procedure to get uncompressed 1280x720 24p footage from AVID to Vegas?

If they're unable to create files bigger than 4 GB, then they probably need to update whatever drive they're rendering TO to NTFS, instead of FAT32. Then they can create bigger files.

I would STRONGLY recommend AVI over Quicktime.

You can set the project properties to 960x720 then set the project PAR to 1.333.

960x720 with a PAR of 1.333 is standard for 60hz DVCPRO HD at 720p.

>> That was my first thought too, but that was not the problem. The HD is formatted NTFS, but their software refuses to export anything in AVI format greater that 4GB. MOV and other formats seem to be no problem. No idea why the AVI is failing for them.

>> I agree...but alas, it seems they need to figure out why their Avid system is unhappy with big AVI exports.

>> Ah...this makes sense now. Are you saying that I essentially need to stretch the image? I was under the impression that this was going to be 1280x720 square pixels. I set my project to be HD 1280x720 and then when I dropped clips on the timeline I set the property of the clip to not maintain aspect so then it looks fine. Is that essentially doing that same thing as setting the project par to 1.33? The final output is intended to be a PC WMV running 1280x720.

No, DVCPRO HD 720p isn't inherently square pixels. Setting the timeline to conform to the footage will yield the best results while editing (though you could work with it any timeline). You can export as anything you want.

David,

You recommend using AVI instead of MOV. If both are uncompressed, can you explain what advantage there would be to using the AVI over the MOV?
