Need quick advice on school topic for editing class...

My Professor wants us to write a paper and present a topic in class on an editing element. I was given "Building Performance" as my topic. We are supposed to choose a scene from a tv show or film. I am confused as what she means for this. I was wondering if anyone could give me an insight into this... focusing on just what it could mean in an editing/post sense.
Thanks in advance, Paul.

I would guess that "building performance" refers to working with different takes to find the best way to show the actors without ruining the timing or emotion, but the best person to ask is your professor.

A scene that comes to mind is toward the end of Once Upon a Time in America where *spoilers* Noodles meets with Deborah again when they are older. The blocking, camera work, and editing is brilliant to enhance the performances.

Here's the scene I was talking about:

Almost every cut is perfect, in my opinion. The cut at 3:49 in particular. The audience feels this moment of surprise/happiness the moment we cut to her closeup. I imagine this whole scene doesn't mean much unless you've seen the whole film, by the way.
