Need Purchase Advise & New To Forums

Greetings everyone, long time, errr... lurker here

I sincerely hope that I am posting in the proper location. I have in the past purchased several "moderately" nice camcorders, but have been out of the loop, on the technology, and "creature features" as of lately.

My question, if I may be simplistic in its statement is as followed. Please bear in mind that I did search, read, and do my best to become more acclimated to the newer technologies that are out.

My company works with a lot of new companies, startups, etc. I do a considerable amount of filming: commercials, internet videos and presentations, time lapsed videos, etc.

I am looking for (all comments welcomed), the best HD based camcorder/camera that I can get around the $3,500.00 range (based on a legitamite internet store price). Whereas some cameras may in fact be $4,100.00 but can be bought online for $3,500.00 etc.

Features: Let me be almost archaic in my response. As many as I can get for shooting any and all types of footage, but I want HD for sure if that is the highest resolution that I can get.

I really do not want to over-qualify my description as to what I am hunting, but merely make this post as a "point of entry" for recommendations.

The first thing I have had my eye on is the Sony HDR-FX1 HDV Handycam® Camcorder.

My question is, what other camera is better feature wise for the money, or has been released recently etc.

I understand that this is all personal opinion, but you get enough opinions picking the same thing repeatedly, well, you get your answer

Glad to be an active member now guys.

well, if you're looking for an HD camera for that price, good luck! the FX-1 is your best bet if you are strictly going for resolution. i don't really have anything else to say, so gl with that.

The FX-1 is pretty much the only camera in that price range that is worth considering. You could also look at the JVC HD1 and HD10, but they're awful camcorders and the FX1 is far superior to them.

If you want more features than what the FX1 offers, the price goes up significantly: the Z1 is $4900, the HD100 is about $5500. In the $3,000 price bracket, the FX1 is the only thing to consider.

Now you just have to determine if it does what you need -- spending $3,000 to get a camera that doesn't do what you want, "just because it's HD", is perhaps not the wisest course of action.

Barry, thank you for responding. The P24 issue I keep seeing repeatedly, not sure how much this would effect me.

For the most part, I am not a film-maker per say, I shoot footage, for various companies, time lapsed, and output to web based media or dvd for distribution to showcase various products. IE: Home building etc. While I have noted some incredible talent on these forums, I am having a hard time seeing that everyone on here is creating these videos with $5500 cameras etc, although I do understand your point.

If I was after the ability to record in movie style 16 x 9 wide HD, obviously the FX-1 is a good entry level camcorder from what I am gathering.

The entire p24 issue is confusing me though, anyone clarify or elaborate on this?
