Need production advice. Re: insurance coverages

Hello,

I need some advice for a shoot I'm doing. I'm considering hiring a JIB operator for an event being held on a public road. The JIB operator asked me if I had insurance to cover him just in case something happened. Since this guy is a self contracted operator do I need to provide the insurance or is he normally suppose to carry his own?

I'm a bit new to this so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Contractors are not generally covered under worker's comp (only employees) and liability usually only covers damage or injury to people not directly connected to the shoot (like bystanders). So he is probably asking if you have some sort of production insurance.

Typically contractors (AFAIK) are responsible for their own insurance, but they may also assume that the production itself is insured.

Ok, so if I understand correctly.....typically the contractor has his own insurance but he is banking on me being able to cover him with my own???

Shouldn't his rates be cheaper then if he doesn't have coverage?

Thanks for the info.

Sorry for not being clear. There are a number of different types of insurance on a set. Liability, Workers Comp, insurance that covers gear, completion bonds, etc. Typically contractors will have some of their own insurance since they are technically self-employed. That will often cover them, their employees (if they have any) and their gear. If he wants you to cover him and his gear that seems to me to be a bit out of the ordinary. If he is just looking for liability insurance (like if his jib fell over and hit someone who was walking by), that is usually part of the production (meaning you)

But my experience in this probably more limited than some other members. I usually get hired more often than I do the hiring.
