Need portable audio recorder

Hello all. Don't know if this discussion has already been started, but I'm looking for a good, cheap (under $900) portable audio recorder. I've been looking at the MAR-PMD670 with the 1 GB card. Anyone use this? I have read that this unit has some battery issues. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have used the ZOOM PS-04. $200

Actually works pretty well.

MD Recorder? Really?? For recording actors then syncing with footage in post? Those things record decent audio? Can I use a boom mic with it?

Re: Need portable audio recorder

I compared products in this category and settled on the 670 because:
1. It can accept my Senn. boom mike.
2. No moving parts, so less to break.
3. Digital output.
4. In use by people who could choose something more expensive...like a radio network in the Netherlands (given to all their reporters), a radio reporter in L.A., etc.
5. I understand that battery life is actually fairly good, and I like that there are many options...including plain old double A's which, while not the best environmental choice, are everywhere.

Do a Google search and you'll find lots of positive reviews. Bayview Pro Audio has it for $620, if you call and ask.

I use one all the time to record concerts. I place a mic in the sweet spot of the club and send that audio to my DVX on ch 1 and 2. Then I take audio from the sound board and send it to my MD recorder and sync it later in post.

When your ready to by a MDR, make sure you by one with a mic input. There are many different MD models and some only have a line in/output. Some even come with a stereo mic. You could use any mic you want with them but first you'll need an adaptor patch cable to go from stereo mini jack to XLR. The cable is easy to make on your own.

You can expext to pay @ $99.00 to $350.00 for one and the discs can be re-recorded on many of times. I get my discs from Circuit City, 24 pack for $19.95

Great feedback. Thanks everyone. I'll look into MDs, though the 670 still looks pretty sweet.

Re: Need portable audio recorder

Why bother with an external recorder? Why not jsut record straight to tape via the XLRs on the DVX?

Well, here's the thing. I like the idea of camera mobility and separating the sound from the images. I don't mind syncing in post. Also, I don't have a DVX. But I may buy one soon. In fact, I plan to shoot my first feature next year and am trying to decide whether to buy a DVX and shoot in 24p video, or buy a Classic Pro8mm camera and shoot in 24p film. Either way, I want to use a portable audio recorder.

My real problem is deciding between video or film. Video would be cheaper of course. But I find film so alluring.

Re: Need portable audio recorder

IMHO you should get a field mixer and run the mic through that, then to the DVX. It'll separate the sound for control by a sound recordist, while not having to bother with sync. Basically, you can either buy a sound recorder, or a field mixer... the choice is in your hands. :)
