Need monitor for "true 24p" playback

Hey all,

Can anybody give me a recommendation on a monitor that is able to playback TRUE 24p (not 23.98). Thanks!

looking for something as cheap possible. We won't be doing the final color correction on the monitor so playback is the most important aspect. I know that it isn't a common feature so I do expect to shell out a nice chunk of change for it.

We are using a Canopus box with firewire. I tried hooking up an HDTV using S-Video but it still wouldn't play back properly, would it have to be an HDMI cable?

Ahh...so Standard Definition then? that Box only does DV. Period...end of sentence. If you are trying to monitor HD, then you need another box. Matrox MXO2 mini, Decklink INtensity Pro...

TRUE 24...23.98... SD. Well, SD formats aren't true 23.98. They are 29.97. Just because you have 23.98 DV footage doesn't mean that there is an SD monitoring, or output to tape solution, that matches that. There isn't. The only reason to be cutting DV at 23.98 is to a) do a film out, b) output to HD, c) output to DVD.

But for monitoring, you need to have the signal converted to 29.97 to view on an external monitor. I don't know how well the canopus does this...does it? Can you view 23.98 on an SD monitor at 29.97? If so...go with that. 23.98 monitoring solutions are HD only, AFAIK.

the footage was shot on film at 24fps (not 23.98). The frame rate of our digital media is 24. I was under the assumption that TRUE 24 is 24 and not 23.98, sorry if I was mistaken.

Do you know of any signal converters that can go from 24fps to 29.97? or any other solution?

AHhhh...you didn't say that. DETAILS are very important when talking about this.

So you shot on film at 24fps...so you telecined to DV tape, and then reverse telecined the tape to TRUE 24fps, right? Sorry, not many people work in true 24fps. Did you telecine to an HD format first, then make dubs, or are you planning a negative cut with this?

OH, that is besides the point. For TRUE 24fps monitoring you cannot use the canopus. 24 solid fps is not a format that works via firewire. You will need a capture card...but then I am not sure that even THAT will work for monitoring. formats viewable on monitors need to be in a broadcast frame rate....29.97, 23.98. I don't think 24fps solid will work.

But then again, I don't work in film at 24fps...all the film I worked with was telecined to tape at 29.97 or 23.98 for television.

So you shot on film at 24fps...so you telecined to DV tape, and then reverse telecined the tape to TRUE 24fps, right?

That's our process. We'll look into getting a capture card and if that doesn't work we'll still need a converter for the signal of some sort?

Not really- FCP automatically adds pulldown on playout to DV. So any DV device and SD monitor will let you screen 24p out. There's zero benefit to actually seeing 24 frames- you see those in pause on your desktop canvas in FCP.

Not sure what you mean but you have the choice or standard 3:2 or other pulldown patterns like 2-3-3-2 etc in FCP. Of course you're actually seeing 29.97 (24p + 3:2 pulldown) coming out on your TV- but guess what so is just about everyone watching on their sets at home. If you actually want to see 1:1 24 frames on a monitor, you can spend the dough on a true 24p monitor and output card- but it's hardly necessary to get the job of editing done.
