Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

hello.

i am very lucky, a friend of mine who owns a manufacturing company has offered to make me a custom desk for my editing setup as a wedding present.

i don't want to blow this by "designing" something that won't be functional.

they build killer workstation desks for engineers with square steel tubing and really nice laminated wood tops.

i know i want something sort of square in shape to make it more efficent.

with my current desk too many things are out of reach.

i have 3 lcd monitors and a 14" sony ntsc monitor

my computer / drive system is on the floor in a rack.

links to commercially available desks would also be a big help.

you will want something like this:

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

i like the looks of that desk, the first question is about the monitor shelf, i have an "arm" that holds my three lcd monitors so that shelf would actually get in the way.

i am thinking of getting a heavy duty arm to let me move my sony ntsc monitor closer or farther away when i'm not using it.

i think i would like something with even more of an arc.

i'm trying to draw out what i need but pictures definitely help.

the person building it for me has a factory with metal shops, welding dept. wood shops etc.

he uses square steel for the legs and frame.

dont count out that shelf.. under the shelf there goes your decks etc.. and if there is no monitors above then you can put something else up there.

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

what are the dimension of that table and how deep is the shelf?

i'm starting to think the shelf might be more useful as it will recover some otherwise lost space on the desk...

i'm trying to figure out the most useful arrangement of 3 lcd monitors and a 14" sony ntsc.

i was happy with two lcd's but then a friend had a third identical to my lcd's and he swapped me something for it really cheap and it's nice, but still trying to get a handle on how to best rearrange my desktop both physically and software/workflow wise.

looking sweet KAI! ..you do need to upgrade your chair though.lol. I got myslef one (well i asked fot it for christmas about 2 years ago) all leather highback with a heated lower back, and full back massage cushion in it.. cause i like all that mojo.

I really like the desk jarred posted there. it looks like KAI's but has room under the monitor shelf.. ..room for 4 displays? I could SOOO use a desk like that. I dont even have a "real" nice desk right now.. I use one I built one from some wood and shelving stuff. It works, but id like to have it look a little nicer with a little more room to better organize stuff..

yeah I got a Mesh chair and it changed my life :)

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

This isn't entirely off topic but you can go to a site like www.nigelb.com for ideas and even dimensions. I had one of their catalogs several years ago, took the dimensions down to a cabinet maker, and had a workstation built for a fraction of the price.

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

well i have the chair part taken care of, i got an aeron years ago and have been very happy with it.

a lot of misc. aches and pains from sitting so much in front of the computer went away.

Anyone know a good site to visit for desks like the ones posted above?

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

these links to companies who make video desks are great, giving me a lot of ideas!

i decided to go with a monitor shelf and i'm having that made this week so i can try that out before i commit to a design for the desk part, i can use the monitor shelf with my current 72"x30" plastic folding lifetime table.

the shelf will be 72" wide and it is an arc, the back is straight across and the front is 20" deep on the ends and 10" deep in the middle with a radius curve connecting across.

i made a scale drawing in illustrator and the 3 lcd's and the sony ntsc should fit just right.

I have one from Omnirax as well. Too bad I bought it back when I was into audio engineering (not video). The design I got was made more for 19" racked gear than video equipment. It works ok. However, I am considering buying something different soon. I actually have two desks in my office now. One for my MAC, and the Omnirax for my 3 PCs. After I clean up a bit, perhaps I'll post a picture. LOL

Re: Need helping desiging the ultime editing desk

You may want to consider a counter top height desk that you can stand at or use an architects chair to sit. I had them build my desk that way at work and even sitting I can work all day without back strain. At home my desk is desk top height and my back is stessed after about an hour. This may be because I never seem to fully sit in the chair at work, I just sit on the edge with my legs pretty straight which seems to keep my back straighter also. Space issues are the only reason I haven't changed my desk at home. For me it's way more healthy. And for some reason I just can't stay seated when editing audio no matter what the setup is. The counter top height just works great for me.
