Ok, so I have been shooting for a recent project with several different Matte Boxes and the decision has been made to buy one. Throughout my research on this site I have notice that this can be a rather heated debate and I don't plan on starting one. I decided that I am going to pay the hefty amount that many want for them so I don't want this to turn into a indie snap vs. Chrosziel thread. That being said my wonderful experience shooting with one didn't go without its struggles. I was wondering if any of you could help me find a reason and a remedy for some of these problems.
first off, I experienced some rather nasty flares and "ghost images" off of my filters. My instincts tell me that light was getting in through the back of the matte box and was hitting the filter in front of the lens. I think it happened again when I had the filter tray too high in the tray to accommodate a grad. (so light would get in through the top) Am i correct on these assumptions? How can I avoid this in the future.
That really was it. I also experienced some really nasty fogging on one of the filters during an early morning shoot but I can't assume that there is much to do about that other than constantly clean it. And in a rush situation resulted in more smearing than cleaning. Oh well. Lesson learned.
Also, if anyone could suggest a small amount of filters that would be best to have that would be great. I am thinking about a couple of ND grads and definitely a Pol. anything else I should have in my bag of goodies?
Thanks again!
