I want to use a song for a video it's for the Canadian Cancer Society they are having a dinner for all the volunteers I am making a 5 min video for them showing
pictures from past events and I have be Contacting people and asking for the use of the song. But I want to know if I used a song for this type of event do I need to get licensing for the music?
I am doing the video for free and the song would only be used for the video.

Please help

Technically you can't use the song without permission... it's a public performance... but who is going to sue a Cancer Society??

...oh yeah... the RIAA. After all, they sue six-year-olds.

In your situation you're 99.9999% fine, but "technically" you need permission.

But what about this...suppose I was making a personal video but with the intent of posting a link to it on, oh, I dont know, PK's charity-oriented site :engel017: , in the hopes of generating more hits to his page, thus making money for his charity efforts?

How about then?

If you put someone else's music in the personal video then there is still a problem.

Here is a real-world scenario, and while it relates to film instead of music, it shows how often we mis-judge the reach of copyright:

I make family movies and distribute them on DVD. Churches often buy these to add to their libraries. That is perfectly legal, and it is fine for them to lend/rent them to people who come to the library.

What is NOT legal is for a Sunday School teacher to go down to the library, grab one of my movies off the shelf, and show it to the kids during a church event, lock-in, whatever. The church needs a public performance license at that point.

I won't go into whether or not I'm a big bad enforcer cracking down on a few church kids enjoying my movies... heck, before I started getting requests from churches about how they could license the movies I didn't even realize they couldn't technically show them to a group of kids in a classroom. For me, it's free advertising. Those kids are going to run home to mom and dad and ask to buy the movies to keep at home. Other people don't look at it that way.

I agree, use the song and don't worry about it. You're not profiting from it so the law can be bent a little. But, just to be careful, on the night of the event I would find a nice safe-house and lay-low for a few days. :) j/k Good luck!

Owen - So I'm confused. Does this mean I can keep all the money I made selling your DVDs in southeast Asia or not? :)
