Need help with "viewable safty zone"?

I shot a few spots for local businesses at a local TV station that I volunteer at. I took the footage home and edited one of the spots in Vegas 8 pro. I rendered to an .wmv file (my bad) and took it to the station for airing.

The "main guy" at the station said it would have been better if It were an .avi or quicktime file but he would load it into the system (Mac / Adobe Premier) and convert it. He loaded it and it was time for him to go home. We ended up not using the spot that night but we did watch it and the edges were cropped. Another person said that I need to make sure I edit in the "monitor safety zone". I said I'd never seen anything related to a monitor safety zone in Vegas. She said she was sure there was something like that in Vegas, even though she has never used Vegas.

So my question is:
Is there a monitor safety zone in Vegas (there is in Adobe Premier...I saw it) or is the sizing of the video something that the should have been done while loading it into, or outputting it from Adobe Premier?

Thanks for any help,

Yes, Vegas has safe zones. Both action safe and title safe. However, it's likely you are having a very different issue.

And rendering to WMV is about as poor a choice as you could make for going to broadcast.

It's in the Overlays button above the preview screen. Looks like the tic-tac-toe board.

What other issue were you thinking, Perrone?

David, I was thinking if he was just seeing the ACTUAL edges of the video cropped he might have had some other pan/crop or something else going on.

On thinking about this more, "Action Safe" seems the most likely culprit though. Getting lost behind the screen bezel. But even with that, it's going to be a DEVIL to fix because unless you compensate for it in filming, you're always going to lose the edges of the screen.

Thanks for the help guys. OK so...............

PF, I've seen the title safe but not the action safe. Where would I find this? What do you think the "very different issue" might be? What would be the best to render to? I've been recording and editing audio for years but I'm a newbie with video.

Oh, thanks DJ. I'll check out the action safe in the overlays.

I had no control over the actual filming. It was all done at the TV station. I just run the Kayak switcher board.

Any more advice would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

The only fix would be to zoom out a bit, putting the edges of the image right at the action safe lines (or just outside), leaving black around the edges. It'll get everything within the safe area, but it may show black edges on some TVs.

But obviously, that's a desperation fix. You want to make sure to shoot it properly. :)
