Need help with some Basic things

Ok, so I've read about 35mm Adapters and whatnot but am still a little confused in some areas. I know they seem basic, and maybe I'm just bad at searching today but I can't seem to find the answers for the life of me! If someone can help answer my questions I'd be extremely grateful!

  • I know that you can buy an additional lens to put on the end of the 35mm adapter, but do you have to? Can you film with JUST the adapter?
  • What kind of lenses should be used with the adapter? Still camera lenses?
  • How do you know what results you get from the different lenses? (Ex. What is the difference between 35mm, 50mm, or 70mm, etc...)
I believe that that's all of the questions I have right now. Again, thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer them!

I don't own an adapter, but I can help with a few things...

The point of the adapter is to use lenses... you are adapting a 35mm lens to a camera that normally wouldn't be able to use it. They're useless without the lenses.

Most adapters are designed for use with SLR (still camera) lenses, but some adapter makers make mounts for cinema lenses (though those lenses can run tens of thousands of dollars)

Different sized lenses deal with focal length. 50mm is approximately what the human eye sees. A smaller number (like 28mm) is going to be more wide angle, while a bigger number (like 105mm) is going to be more telephoto.

Hopefully someone like Dennis at Cinevate will pop in with better answers than me :)

You really need to look through the threads and read the stickies (yellow links) on the page

I have looked and can't find the information that I need...it's weird because I've never had this much trouble finding something before!

I know the information is there, I just can't seem to grasp it.

50mm = normal view
less than 50 is wide angle
more than 50 is telephoto

for a start I would get a 50mm f1.4, then a somewhere between 24, 28 or 35mm wide angle
and a nice 85 or 105mm telephoto for closeups

buy used lenses, buy fast lenses
