Hey all

I am a new member on the forum but really like all the informed discussion that takes place here. I hope that someone will be able to help me with some information or thoughts about a project I am doing. I am trying to make a music video based on something like the reference link I am posting below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1visRgIIJOE

I have some questions in regard to this video so I hope you will all be able to provide me with the answers I am hoping for.

1) It doesn't seem like there is any rotoscoping work in the video. Or am I wrong?
2) It seems like the camera was locked down during the green screen shoot and all the camera moves were added in the post with something like after effects. Am I right or wrong on this count? Also, could someone brief me on the technique used as I am not very familiar with the after effects interface but I can learn.
3) Any thoughts on how this particular look was achieved in relation to color grading? I use FCP 5...would be able to give me somthing similar or actually something a little more saturated?

Please forgive me if my questions and assumptions make me sound stupid. I am just trying to learn.

I would love some feedback on this.

All the best to you all.

My apologies

My apologies

I'm sorry if it is...I thought this is the place to ask questions about compositing issues and things like that...could you direct me where to post this thread?

You could ask one of the moderators to move the thread to the AE forum.
Might get a quicker response.

Looks like all the layers were keyed. This is a fairly standard approach to shooting layers against a keyed background.

Yes, these are a series of shots then manipulated as 3D layers in a compositing program. You can use almost any pro-level compositor to get this effect. I've also seen similar approaches taken by bringing in keyed footage that is mapped onto planes in a 3D program. I recall an animated program about 10 years ago that was created by using 2D planes in ElectricImage. It was pretty slick because they generated shadow effects on a ground plane. It was sort of like looking at an animated paper dolls on a table top. The 3D allowed them to do camera moves and generate shadows while maintaining the 2D look of the thing. Frankly, we've been considering a similar approach to a music video project we're going to be doing this summer.

Looks pretty clear to me that for the primary performance layers they completely desaturated the images and reduced the latitude so that you are left with the high contrast footage you see here. They then use subtle colorization for the background to achieve this look. It's actually pretty simple from a CC standpoint and looks quite sweet. The high contrast imagery works really well for this kind of motion graphics.

great

great

Thank you for the response Mark...It's good to get an informed opinion on these things since I will be doing it for the first time...but at least I know that I am on the right track now
