Need help with importing DV 60i footage?

Hi all,

We recorded a video today on DV in standard def 4:3 at 60i (by request). We usually record in HDV so we are unfamiliar with this format. When trying to capture the footage into Final Cut Pro we can not find the right capture setting (59.94 interlaced DV I believe?) and the footage is coming in extremely blurry and interlaced. What can we do to get the capture and timeline settings to match our footage and play it correctly? (It looks great on the camera viewfinder). We are using a Canon XH-A1.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Nate

Use the DV - NTSC preset to get the proper capture and project settings. SD frame rates are talked about in frames, not fields, per second so the frame rate will be 29.97. What are you looking at to determine that the footage is blurry (are you using just your computer monitor or an SD broadcast monitor) and why are you surprised an interlaced format looks interlaced?

We were viewing it off an Apple LED, but then we checked it on our SD Color Monitor and it looked a little better, but still bad quality. It is extremely interlaced and blurry compared to what we saw on camera when we recorded and in our field monitor.

Is there any sort of conversion we need to do before we put it in the timeline, or possibly an output setting that is optimized for SD footage?

Thanks,

Nate

No, there's no special settings other than using the DV-NTSC preset to setup the project. I'd double check your sequence settings and the settings on the I/O device you are using to feed the SD TV.

What does the footage look like if you play it back from the camera onto your SD TV?
