Need help with HD streaming, DivX, and H.264 video.

Hey everyone,
I've spent hours of researching online and testing several ways to stream video online and I can't say I've discovered the best method yet.

I host my own web server and I have a 2.5Mb upload speed connection. So far my tests have showed me using DivX player to be the best and most consistent way to stream high-quality video over the internet, such as full-length movies, without long pre-buffer times and constantly having to re-buffer during playback. I have family members on various high-speed connections that test it for me and DivX player was the most consistent, the only drawback being is the audience has to download and install something, which most people are rather skeptical nowadays about doing.

The problem I've ran into using the DivX codec is it hasn't proven to be very efficient when it comes to HD format. I bought the DivX 7 Pro, but it appears only the DivX Converter uses the H.264 codec and when choosing the DivX codec in Sony Vegas 8, it says 6.8 or something and only says the H.263, not the H.264.

Now I've done a lot of testing with the MP4 files using the MainConcept codec and it appears either a CBR of no lower than 1,000 Kbps or a VBR of no lower than 1,000 Average and 1,500 Max yeilds good file sizes and very decent quality at a 640 resolution. My only issue with the MP4 files is they don't seem to be very flexible with slower broadband connections, meaning they tend to not stream very well and either take a long time to pre-buffer or have to constantly re-buffer. I use the JW-Player for my MP4 files due to it's simplicity.

If anyone can give me some suggestions for optimal bitrates, formats, and methods for 640 streaming HD video, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't plan to have much traffic as they are family videos I'm sharing. I'm not sure how to best figure bandwidth with bitrate either as I don't know how that all translates according to my upload speed and what is the ideal target bandwidth for broadband connections.

Thank you very much in advance.

Sounds like you should be streaming something with Flash video if you're trying to deliver over a website.

Check out one of my megathreads to get acquainted with Flash video:

You can stream h.264 but you need an encoder that can create streamable .mp4 files. The CS4 suite has support built in now, but few people have upgraded.

do you have a windows server? because it includes a very sophisticated video server for free.

the problem with just putting it out there on any server is that it's http-served, which presents problems of it's own.

regardless, you need to be looking for two-pass encoding, with vbr capability... i serve up 960x540 hd flash files, 720kbps total... 500-600kbps video for your 640 sd stuff should be enough bandwidth, if the editing and encoding is done right.

the mainconcept h.264 encoder should be capable of encoding any bitrate you want... what editor are you using?
