Need help with compression

Could someone please tell me what I need to do to compress my videos so that the files are small and web-friendly? I tried at least a dozen settings last night but I can't find one that gets the job done. I was able to get my clip down to under 4 megs but it was in mpeg4 and it wouldn't play in my browser. Every other time I exported my clip it was like 27 megs or so.

Re: Need help with compression

I've got my own system and preferences for compressing. Depending on the delivery of course dictates the compression strategy. Hope this helps...

If you can, I HIGHLY recommend Sorenson Squeeze. It creates the best compresssions I've seen and comes with Sorenson 3.

Otherwise, your troubles with MPG-4 are either:
1. You compressed mpg-4 with mpg-4 encoding.
2. QT is not updated. Only the most updated versions of QT and Media Player can play real MPG-4 files. Use QT-->Help-->Check for Updates to be sure your current.

If you really want to use MPG-4, export/compress as a QT *.mov, but under 'encoder' select MPG-4 compression. I know this is wierd, but since QT is not a real 'format' but a set of instructions instead, you create a mpg4 clip with a *.mov extension. This should solve your playback setting.

Otherwise, Sorenson 3 compression rocks or regular 'Sorenson' if you don't have '3'.

Digging deeper, Use a medium setting for your video quality, try 15 fps and set your key frames also to 15 (setting key frames to a number divisible or in common with your fps will help smooth compression...like 24fps and keys of 24, 12, 8, or 4). Finally, make sure your audio is IMA 4:1. I use 32kHz, 16 bit and convert stereo to mono.

Oh, depending on your deliver, sometimes adding a Filter of 'De-Interlacing' with the blur setting will also help. I've learned myself alot from previewing the movies on Apple's site and watching what tricks are used...like no dissolves! blurs on fast moving objects and photos, etc..
