Need help speeding up HD workflow

Hello, editing HD, super slow to work with, can someone tell me how to 'offline' an edit, create a proxy to work with, thank you.

Or if there's a way to edit without needing to offline, I'm up for that too

ok this isn't that great of a solution but you can fake a proxy by exporting the media as SD.. don't know if you really wanna do that - seems like it would take forever tho. the other thing is to make sure you're in "draft" quality when previewing. but that isn't THAT much help either. faster cpu / more ram are the only solutions i know of with premiere
 
One thing that you can do is render all of your stock HD footage into very low quality footage and do the edit with them then add the stock footage in when you are ready to do a final export. This saves time working in front of the computer but does take a long time to render the files. This is also a good solution if you need to send footage off to be edited but can do the final export.
 
thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm surprised it takes so long to scrub/edit in Premiere right now. I just bought a quad with 4g of ram and lots of drive space.
 
What kind of HD are you working with, and what kind of hard drive setup? Editing DVCPRO HD on my year-old-plus computer is pretty snappy, even using 1080p.
 
It's 1080i HDV, not sure the harddrive setup, I'm assuming you mean SATA, RAID right? I don't think I have any of those. I work in 64bit vista if that means anything.
 
Yeah HDV is pretty painfully hard to edit for me as well on a dual quad core... DVCProHD however just sings on my dual core laptop... To remedy the HDV problem we use Matrox's RTX2 board and breakout box. Works pretty well, but I'd much rather have a cheaper non hardware solution. Or just a codec that wasnt so intensive to edit...
 
hey i figured out why it was so slow, apparently I had one long hour file of HDV to edit, once I deleted and re-captured using HDV split to make smaller files, everythings fine!
