Need Help Rendering...

I rendered some footage and burned it to a DVD but when I played it, the sides of the picture were cut off. What is going on? What should I do?

Nothing. That's normal. It's the overscan of your TV.

This is why you would use action-safe and title-safe lines -- to determine what a TV is likely to cut off from the picture.

How do I do that?

How would I render something so that it would be in widescreen?

Go to the tic-tac-toe button over your preview window. Click the down-arrow and choose "Safe Areas." Clicking the button then toggles it on and off.

I understand now. Now, how do I change the video itself to fit inside those lines?

You can do it in pan-crop by enlarging the rectangle. I wouldn' t recommend it, though. There's really no need for it. Any DVD you watch -- even bought from the store -- will do the same. It's a TV issue, not a DVD issue.

If you're planning to project it, it won't matter, because projectors don't have overscan and you'll see the whole picture.

To go out to widescreen, you should first make sure your video is widescreen. Be in a widescreen project. If you shot squeeze, then you should be set; you can crop it more if you want 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. If you shot letterbox or 4:3, you'll have to crop your video to the 16:9 preset (or more, if you want the other aspect ratios). Your video should fill the wide frame.

Then, render out as Widescreen.
