So at my work, we just got HD .mov files that my PC just can't playback / edit smoothly. One 25 minute file is 22.6 gigabytes with like a 14000 kbps bitrate. Do I need a special codec or something to play / edit these files? How can I give you guys more info. about the file? Should I just encode all the files into something more manageable?

Thanks for the help!

What player are you trying to use? Have you tried VLC?

What NLE do you have?

14000kbs should not be a problem, we play files much higher than that.... alternatively, you'll want to transcode it to a lower bit rate file (e.g. 5000 just like YouTube). What software do you have?

I've tried playing it on VLC player and I edit on Premiere Pro CS5.5. I've ended up just converting all of the files to .mp4 using the h264 codec in the file's original frame rate.
