Need help in making a purchase decision

Hi
I'm relatively new to the world of NLE's and am confused by the wealth of choices to make. Before I make a serious commitment both time and financial wise, I'd like to solicit as much feedback as possible about which path to take.
I recently purchased a Canon 7d, and am passionate about becoming more proficient as an editor, and am currently Mac based. I've read elsewhere that a lot of people are gravitating towards Premiere because of the regular updates and things like the Mercury Playback Engine.
Can anyone with knowledge of both programs, summarize a few key advantages of investing in FCP?
 
That's something you can search for on Google and find endless debates. Why not explore that a bit and then get back to us. And incidentally Premiere is something you can download a demo on and FCP you can try in an Apple Store. So that would also be a wise course of action. they are both tools- neither is definitively superior.

Thanks. Apparently an upgrade to FCP is due sometime this year. Will put off making any decision until the new release.
