I know this forum is plagued with "should I buy X or Y" but I have read a lot and have come to no solid conclusion. I mainly shoot snowboarding films, and toy with the idea of other things but lets concentrate on my favorite winter sport. Right now we film only with an Arriflex 16mm camera and want to supplement it with sound and other angles and the less costly DV tapes. I would love to have a flim premier at a theater this year, but might have to use a digital projector since I doubt we can afford to transfer to 35mm (and dont have much reason to). I also need something that is good for capturing fast action and will be good for slow motion. Low light is not a huge issue since the snow is more than reflective. I am looking at the DVX and the FX1 and a VX2100. Here are my reasons for each:
DVX: would love to have the film look, good price, like the stills and clips I have seen so far. I have not been able to hold one or see one in person though and might not be able to.
FX1: HD seems like the best option to project onto a big screen and 16:9 is so sexy (no real reasons for this but we all love widescreen). Most expensive but I was able to look at one today and it was pretty sweet in the store. Who know on the hill. 60i should be fine for snowboarding.
VX2100: cheapest and an industry legend. Great picture.
I used to have a single chip camera and hated the crappy consumer quality, bad optics, and the fact that is was designed to fail in a couple years. I always loved the picture from friends vx1000 and gl1, and would love to have something that looks different than your typical backyard snowboard footage (thus the 16mm). But we do need a digi supplement. Thanks guys, and sorry for beating a dead horse but it seems different for different apps.
Oh yeah, we like to shoot with wide angle lenses but no fisheye, which stock lense is better for this since I wont have another $800 for getting a lense after the camera purchase.
