Need Help folks

Feel free to move this around should it belong to the Vegas/AE forum.

Okay folks I need somehelp here. I havent down any greenscreen work since colege and I wasn't to into it back then. I'm working ona music vid and I need the following. Take a look at the link for test grabs (done in Vegas) Mind you this isn't the final lighting.

http://www.angelfire.com/film/octoberproductions/

I was shooting under flo lights, against a white background so it looks like crap. Anyway... I have several pieces of green cards, and I need to key in video over these cards as seen in the picture. Basically it's like a giant jigsaw puzzle by the end of the video. My questions are....

Every piece of green needs to hold a differet piece of video... can this be done?? There will be 15-20 pieces total!

Should I use Vegas or move into something like After Effects for this project?

Notice the rough edges that look like Interlacing??? What is that and how do I remove it? I figure it's not interlacing problems since I shoot 24pa!

Whats the easiest way to do this?

Any help from you chroma key champs will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Help folks

What you're looking at is ambitious but definitely possible. I'd definitely use After Effects. Also remember that you may have to do some motion tracking and corner keying if the pieces move a lot. This may cause it to look a little cheesy if you don't put a lot of care into it.

Unfortunately, the bane of DV greenscreening is 4:1:1 color space and while some applications seem to smooth it (so that there aren't chunks around the green) others don't and I don't think vegas does. (There are advantages to codecs which do not smoothing the edges, but it makes greenscreening far harder.)

I'd rotoscope each chunk roughly, and if you can't find something to smooth your 4:1:1 artifacts first (magic bullet may do it, I believe), I'd use keylight in AE with 1-2 pixels of pre-blur. Here is my latest greenscreening attempt, btw. I'm happy with it, but the edges are a little green (and I cheated and added saturation to a little area of the face where the greenscreening removed it.): http://home.comcast.net/~wauhkies/image013.jpg

If you want more examples or advice, pm me. I do a lot of greenscreening in AE although I can't claim to be great at it.

And the edges are the result of 4:1:1 compression artifacts. They will be the bane of your greenscreening existance but I've seen worse examples of them than that. So far the key looks good though despite a tiny bit of inevitable spill.

Re: Need Help folks

I'm sure AE could do a better job of it, but Vegas could handle it as well. For keying I've gotten amazingly good keys out of Vegas. The secret is the Chroma Blur filter -- it totally eliminates stairstepping out of chroma keys!

Re: Need Help folks

Thanks guys. This is a quick bit near the end of the video. It shouldn't last more than a minute, and I have freedom to cover up any ugliness with what ever filters I feel fit. I never thought about the chroma filter Barry.. Thanks! I may shoot for vegas because I really want to contain all aspects of the project to one suite if you know what I mean. If I go broke in Vegas (no pun intended) I'll switch to AE.
