Need help exporting giant project file as uncompressed

Hey all,
I'm editing a feature on premiere pro. The size of the project file is gotten too large. I think there's about 760 items in my import box. The program is now running slow due to the file's size. I'm running 2 gigs of RAM on Microsoft XP, so I know that's not the problem. Yesterday I tried exporting the file as an uncompressed AVI file, and I kept getting the "Unknown Error" box mid-render. I rendered everything I could before trying the export, and I still get the same message. The feature is 77 minutes long, so I tried cutting in half and exporting in parts. Still no luck. I finally tried exporting just 4 minutes of it, and I still couldn't get it to export! Is this because the project file is too big? I need to export as uncompressed because I don't want to lose any quality. What should I do?

Hi,

It still has a CODEC of some kind. AVI is a container in which you use some CODEC to put the file in. Some types are hamstrung by different restrictions, some DV file types can't be longer than 4GBs for example.

Quality for some types of compression isn't nearly affected by mild compression either - not that I'm suggesting a highly compressed file, but perhaps some strategies might not be so bad.

What CODEC are you using to save the file? What compressor type? Huffyuv? It's good, free and works well.

Also, after you export the 77-minute project, what are you going to do with it?

Could be a hardware issue eg disk space.

Could be any of a hundred other things...

Without any detailed info of your setup and material and your project settings... this is all guesswork.

Well I wouldn't be doing my screename any justice if I didn't try taking care of this myself, and it turned out that the first idea I had actually worked out. It turns out that the program was running slow/crashing because of the amount of vid/audio clips I had in my import box (I think it topped out at around 763). The problem was that those imports were in different places in my computer, so when I tried telling my computer to play the timeline or export from the timeline, it was trying to find the source of all 763 of those imports at once and it was too much. So, now that I've broken down the project into the smallest incriments, it's running smoothly again. Thanks for your imput though guys, I always like to check here to see if anyone can fill me in on anything I might not have thought about.

few steps
make sure your scratch disk is set to a drive that has ton of space

get a external drive 500gig @ best buy or whtever plug that in and make that your scratch disk...

good luck
