Need help choosing an affordable shotgun mic

Hey guys. I have used the search function and could not really find here what I am looking for. I am trying to find examples of one of the more affordable AT or Rode shotgun mics that actually sound good :)

I will be getting dialogue on set outside and adding in ambient sounds in post. I just want something in the 200 - 300 dollar range that will sound pretty decent.

Thanks for any help and examples you can link me to.

a search for "Audio Technica" yielded this:

a search for "Rode" yielded this:

a search using the keyword "affordable" yielded this:

note: you can expect some crossover within all three groups.
there are also a few yellow stickies at the top of the forum which might be of some help.

The Rode NTG-2 has been a consistent and solid recommendation. It can be phantom powered or self powered, has good frequency response, Rode's exceptional warranty, and for the price point you get a whole lot of microphone.

The Rode NTG-2 is an awesome entry level shotgun mic, I have recently upgraded mt NTG-2 to the NTG-3 but let me say the NTG-2 did a great job!
