Need help capturing video footage

Hello:

I have a Sony mini-DV TRV camcord. I haven't used Sony Vegas it in a few months, but I am now trying to capture some footage I've been recording. I capture with a firewire, via an Audigy 2 PCI card. I use the Audigy to record digital music also, which comes with another plug in component that is installed like a cd rom or hard drive. I plug my instruments in there. For the Audigy 2 card, it has inputs for my Audigy speakers and has an imput for my firewire cable (that's where I plug in). I've captured with the card before but now I am having problems with doing that. I also have an "Adeptec" card that I use to capture analog video, etc.

When I select "capture video" I get an error message that reads: "Adaptec PCI capture device could not be opened. If I continue on with capture and select "Video", or "Audio", for "Video" it will only list the "Adaptec" card, but if I click on it, I get the same error message (Adaptec PCI captire device could not be opened).

The way I get the Audigy 2 card to work with Firewire is: got to "Options/Preferences/Video Device" and select "Microsoft DV Camera & VCR" (what also works is "Video for Windows Standard"). Then for "Audio", I select "Microsofe Sound Mapper".

This allows me to capture but after I am done the playback video footage will have large square blotches and will the audio will run in slow motion. I notice that if I only capture about 5 minutes it'll be fine although the colors will be dull. During a long capture I will hear crackling in the speakers and a humming sound that comes in and out, plus a hiss every now and then.

I tried to use just my USB port to capture with a USB cable and I get blotches also in the playback footage. I have also received an error message that says "ASIO device Audigy ASIO (9000) does not support current sample rate", which I got once at the end of a capture (which had the blotched pixels in the playback video also). I've pulled, reinserted the Audigy card but my Vegas still won't acknowledge it. I've been in Control Panel and all devices are working fine. The Audigy card works fine for my speakers, and it will capture video if I choose to capture with "video for windows standard", or with Microsoft DV camera & VCR", but the footage will end up blotched and will play in slow motion.

What could suddenly be the problem? Thanks in advance.

Your Preview and Print Device should both be OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV and and your audio should be Creative ASIO. You need to set the project audio sample rate to 48,000 instead of the default 44,100 for the Audigy 2.

You can't capture with Vegas over USB; I suspect you used something else to capture the footage that way, and because of it, you took a hit -- often, devices which allow capture over USB in whatever software downconvert the footage to 320x240 and drop the frame rate to 15 FPS, which would explain what you're seeing. You want to capture over firewire (1394) for full quality.

The colors will appear muted because footage looks different on a computer monitor than it does on a TV.

Thank you. That worked. You've helped me before and now I've really done something wrong.

I have been editing my footage. When I save it, Vegas will only save it as a "VEG" file/format. For 2 days I've been able to go back and retrieve what I've been working on but all of a sudden, when I went out of Vegas to create some music (which I shut down Vegas), I went back and now I can't retrieve the VEG file (I had been saving the edits with different names every so often to assure I would not loose all that I had edited; neither of those files will open either). In "My Computer" on my "capture" drive, the files are there, and show that they have data (biggest one has 36kb), but.... What's going on? Please don't tell me I've screwed up and lost everything.

Thank you for your help.
