Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

It reduces lens flares by making a shadow to cover the lens. It also allows for filters to be attached.

[/quote]

Maybe not... but my 17 years of production experience should count for something, pookie. ::)

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

"17 years of production experience"...perhaps, no way to know, offering an opinion of an untried piece of hardware, no, that doesn't mean much.

Sorry Terry.

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

'Unused' not 'untried'...  I didn't use it on a job, but I did put it on the camera and tested the features it has (wings, flag, filter holders, etc.) and found them to be toy-like in their design.

Thus, I didn't use it on a job... which equals 'unused'.

It's my opinion. I'm entitled to it. I've expressed it.  :P

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

;)

Ahhh... just when I thought we'd buried the hatchet, you went back and edited in 'nice try'. ::)

FWIW... Why are you defending Cavision to the point where you're trying to discredit me in the process?

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Whoa boys, lets play nice. In my opinion the cavision stuff is hit OR miss. My box and FF work great, but I think the quality control at cavision needs work. Chrozsiel has been building for a lot longer and as it should be, their quality is top notch.

Lets all agree... Too bash the guys at Canon...ha ha. Just joking.

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Terry

Let's compare prices, lower cost does not mean lower quality.
You seem to imply, Chrozsiel\Century or die.

As a "17 year pro", I would expect better from you. I've been at this a little longer than you, I've used many different products as I'm sure you have, but I don't buy "brand names" just for the label, I use products that work, if they cost less, so much the better.
The only comment I've made about Century is the cost being higher than Cavision, yet you have seen the need to attack Cavisions products "cheesy clamps...can NOT advise anyone to purchase...toy-like". As you've never actually used the product "I returned the mattebox (unused)", you can hardly offer an opinion.

There needs to be products at a lower cost, or have you forgotten there are many users on this forum who may not be able to afford a "name" brand, and might be interested in something cheaper?

I have no interest in discrediting you, but perhaps a little professional discression....Bill Turner, a  (Century employee) began the Cavision put downs here, clearly with a purpose, but he's a company employee, we are DVX users, and don't need to join in.

The idea is to help, not everyone is a highly paid  ;D pro.

can we kiss and make up?

I never endorsed or mentioned Century or Chrosziel in my posts.

No, I don't buy just "brand names"... that is one reason I gave Cavision a chance.

My opinion is my own regardless if it might coincide with the Pres. of a competing company.

I'm all about helping. That's why I bothered with my opinion.

We can make up... but how about a handshake, instead? ;)

Oh, what the heck... I can't resist a guy named Pookie! :-*

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Pookie,

I don't see why you think Bill was bashing Cavision, in fact he said it was a good value.

His advise is sage. There is reason that Chrosziel and Century cost more than Cavision. There is a reason that Porsches cost more than Hyundais. Each has its niche.

I have a Cavision 4x4 bellows mattebox and it serves me well, but I am considering a Chrosziel or Century now for sturdiness, lens accomodation and eyebrows. They cost more, but they ARE more.

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Terry.... ;D, thats what forums are for, to disagree.

Bill Turners game on the other hand.....the EVS guys never seem to need to put down products...interesting.

Scott, Porsche's cost what they do, because that's what people are willing to pay. Hyundais get you there just as fast (there are speed limits) as Porsche's, and you're not paying for all that extra horse power you can't use anyway's.

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

well for what its worth, bill's posts on every subject that i have seen, seemed very even and non-slanted towards his companys product.

i have appreciated his advice and admired how forthcoming he was about who he worked for.

and no i don't know him and other than the anamorphic eyepiece adaptor (which rocks!) i don't even own any century products.

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

Blah blah blah blah blah...

I'm sure cavision or cinetactics would be great to own. for rental however, I would expect nothing less than Chroizel or perhaps century. Just the same reasoning that I would want nothing less than a satchler tripod. (I wouln't wan't to shell out to buy one for myself, but when renting, that's what I expect!)

lol, you clearly never drove a Porsche.

i have a question on the Formatt box: doesn´t it have a lid on the bottom to prevent the filters to fall down? can you still use a 4x6 grad filter then?

Re: Need Help Buying a Matte Box

i had a formatt and i have a chrosziel now and neither one seems to have a real solid way to prevent the filters from going all the way though!

i had a polarizer filter shoot all the way out the top and fall ou the bottom but luckily it landed on something soft!

for what the formatt costs i couldn't complain, but with the chrosziel i would have expected an italian gentleman in a ferrari to appear out of the ether and catch the filter for me.
