Need help bad!! Can't open VEG files

I have been editing my footage. When I save it, Vegas will only save it as a "VEG" file/format. For 2 days I've been able to go back and retrieve what I've been working on but all of a sudden, when I went out of Vegas to create some music (which I shut down Vegas), I went back and now I can't retrieve the VEG file (I had been saving the edits with different names every so often to assure I would not loose all that I had edited; neither of those files will open either). I go to file, open, select the file to open, which is a VEG file (gray square with a large check mark), select to open it, and I get a message with four choices, the first of which stays that my file can not be located, and it offers to search all the drives. Even when I select to search the drives, the file isn't found.

In "My Computer" on my "capture" drive, the files are there, and show that they have data (biggest one has 36kb), but.... What's going on? Please don't tell me I've screwed up and lost everything.
:crybaby:
Thank you for your help.

I'm guessing that you're new to non-linear editing. It's probably a good idea to read the manual at some point...I'm not trying to be patronising, 'cause I've read it loads of times.

When you save a file from an NLE - not just Vegas - you aren't saving the footage. Your footage is probably still where you captured it to. It will have a file extension of avi or m2t or mpg or qt or something like that. The .VEG files are a only the edits that you applied to your footage. They just contain instructions as to what you did with it, not the footage itself.

The .VEG files will be fairly small (36KB for example), whereas your footage will be large - 10MB, 100MB or even 1GB or over.

When you load the VEG file it loads the footage from where you left it. If it can't find the footage it throws up a dialog box to ask you if you moved it somewhere - I often do this as I have different partitions for current work, past work etc. You just need to tell it where you moved the footage that you captured to.

Hope that helps...

Just a bump really, but, as long as the drives with the supporting media are still connected to the Vegas editing computer, the program will be able to find them when you click through the VEG file as you indicated.

Anytime I'm missing media, it's because I've disconnected the drive (usually an external drive or array of drives).

Hopefully a Vegas guru will see this thread and drop in for a pro answer! In the meantime, make sure that your drives are connected as they were, with no location changes - otherwise Vegas is going to mount a rather tedious search to find the "missing" supporting data.

When you get that grey box, it's having trouble finding specific files you're using in your project. Moving or deleting anything in your Media Pool -- whether it's on the timeline or not -- will cause this box to pop up when you open the VEG file.

That this box DID pop up indicates your VEG file is fine, because if it weren't, it wouldn't have gotten that far.

Did you use any files on your timeline, decide not to use them, and then delete file from your hard drive? Maybe a JPEG or something? Just removing it from the timeline doesn't remove it from the project, and it's still in your Media Pool.
