I am about to send my first full length out too many fests and no matter what settings I use on exporting an AC3 audio track in Vegas 8 my music levals always fluctuate up and down when there is dialogue behind it in a scene and it is very annoying and can't find a way to fix this!!!
I had this problem a long time ago, but found sound crazy work around to it, but forgot what I did and there has to just be a something simple I can turn on or off to fix this. THANKS!

Are you sure that it is hard coded into the AC3 track that way (even when you render out with no AGC)? Could it possibly be your amp/receiver/whatever you're using to review the audio has AGC enabled or maybe the DRC setting is set too high?

If you are reviewing it on your PC, some soundcards have auto loudness equalization which is basically AGC as well, so check for that too.

I have tested this on 5 different sound systems and many different tv's and yes it is hardcoded into the track. :(

Okay so I found out it's Automatic gain control and it's nothing in Vegas but in my sound card which I can't not find an option for it there either and no help on the web either. Wouldn't this effect the sound when I'm just playing the movie in vegas? and anything else I render and play? or music? This only happens when I render AC3 files. ONLY. and on every audio device.

In the ac3 custom settings, try setting your Dialog Normalization to -31dB and then also render out two versions of Dynamic Range Compression; first try Film:Standard and if that's not good try Film:Light. Also make sure that RF Overmodulation Protection is not ticked.

The important part is the -31dB on the Dialog Normalization. If you have it set to something like -27dB, either the boost of the quiet sounds could start too soon or the cut-off of the louder sounds could happen too late.

edit: wrong values

I actually always render at -31 DB and the other details you mention, but I fixed my problem just by rendering my full track as WAVE file and then to AC3 for the DVD burn and it sounds perfect!
