Need Help! An Interview With "Stella"

hey! I was just asked to film an interview with the comedy group Stella! I am SUPER excited/nervous.

For those who are not familiar with them the are 3 former members of the Mtv sketch comedy show The State: David Wain, Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black... all insanely funny guys. you can check them out at stellacomedy.com if youre interested.

Anyways, ive never filmed an interview before and dont have much experience under my belt as filmmaker. So i need your help!

-what lighting should i use? (i currently own 2 halogen flood lights and thats it... sad.. i know..)

-should i rent a lighting rig?

-what setting do you suggest on the cam? (DVX of course)

-do you have any tips or experiences you could share?

anything can offer would be a great help. Thanks!

Congratulations LuzCruz. That's a great gig. Those guys are hilarious. Sorry I can't help you too much on lighting. Just watch the shadows. Make sure you're not casting any on the background. Check out the lighing section of this site. They have some great threads on this topic.

Good luck and can't wait to see the interview.

Alittle off topic, but LuzCruz---is your avatar from Gummo?

Look under 3 point lighting and talking heads. I'd rent an Arri light kit. If you have a budget.

I'll def post the interview when its all done! its going to be sweet. i just hope i wont be laughing over the entire interview.

oh another question.. do you think the onboard mic will be good enough for an intimate interview? or will it be kinda rough?

Thanks PK, Ill check out the lighting section to see if there are any helpful posts.. im sure there are. Maybe ill check the documentary section too, theyll prob have some stuff on interviews.

Yes Thartley, the avatar is from Gummo :). it is a magical movie. although a lot of people i talk to seem to severely dislike it. are you a fan?

Use a lav mic if you are a one man show. The onboard mic is only good for room ambiance / tone. But if that's all you have get the camera as close as possible.

I have seen the movie a couple times and I dontk now what to make of it... There is something about it that is sort of like "I should turn away, but I cant help but watch" sort of thing. The cat killers were the most bizarre...well, and your boy in the rabbit ears... and the midget. Most odd.... :)

Thanks a lot Elvis. Im afraid the onboard mic is all i will have to work with. If i could find a random decent omnidirectional mic do you think that my be better to use than the onboard mic? because that may be an option. I have no budget so im kinda just trying to feel out my options.. but if i have to spend a little money for it to look or sound a million times better i am probably willing to invest. I did a search for three point lighting, thats very helpful, thank you!

Thartley - Gummo is very hard to watch at times. Even though it has a very serious tone i cant help but view it as a dark comedy. So maybe thats why i find it incredibly entertaining. the structure of the film is also amazing. the loose story line thick with symbolysm and the town and culture as the main character is so unique that i am just glued to the screen. but yea.. i have to watch it tons of more times to completely make sense of it :)
