Need Fostex FR-2LE "mic" trim advice ASAP

I got the Fostex FR-2LE recently (have to use this weekend for some ambient recording)...and I'm not sure exactly how to use the "mic trim" control in conjunction with the normal recording volume controls ( I have some basic understanding of audio recording...but I'm not a professional). While I can certainly figure it out by trial and error - I would appreciate any advice on how to use this control "correctly". I am using XLR mics with the recorder.

The Fostex FR-2LE is an excellent machine and I'm sure you will be very happy with it. I gave it a nice revue in LineUp magazine some months ago.

Basically the "Trim" controls are the "rough" adjustment for the microphones.

Ideally the main level control should be about half way round (or a bit more) - you adjust the trim controls so that, when recording, the main control is in this area.

If the trim controls are set too high the main control will be very low - if the trims are too low the main control will be too high.

Set correctly the trims enable you tou have easy and proper level control with just the main fader.

If you are using a dynamic mic. the trims would be set at a higher level than a condenser mic., for example, as the dynamic is less sensitive than a condenser. But whatever mic. you use the trims enable you to use the main control in the best area of operation.

I hope this makes sense.

The Owner's Manual is HERE if you want to read up on it.

I hope this helps - and good luck with the recording.

Thanks John...that makes sense. I didn't mention but I am using a pair AT U851R/W condensors with it.
