Need For Speed

Could this break the video game movie curse? Great looking trailer...but I couldn't help thinking that Aaron Paul's narration needed a '*****' in there somewhere.

Great looking trailer...

It "looked" good as in the cinematography looks nice. But I didn't see anything particularly interesting there. Looks like a bunch of car chases and explosions with no meat on the bone as far as a story goes.

Yeah, there was. Not an award winning story, but it's there.
Many people aren't even interested in it, they just skip it to play the races. But I reckon, there was a thin story to "hold" all these races up all together. Let's hope they hire different writers for the movie!

It's all that's needed to attract the target audience: younger people that plays/played the games.
But I'm with you, nothing extraordinary in the cinematography. Even the color looks closer to videoish than cinematic. I don't put more than 6 out of 10, to be fair.

There was a story, but the story was more of a filler between races, than something that drove it forward. This wasn't the Mass Effect of driving games. So chances are they got a script and slapped 'Need for Speed' onto it.

Look great, but that's all so far. Nice crashes, a somewhat but not entirely cringe worthy voice over, and operatic music. If this is the 'feel' of the movie, at least it will be a fresh approach to the fast and furious series.

That's sort of what I was getting at. Could it break the video game movie curse if it's only a video game movie in name only? Would a Wolverine movie count as a comic book movie if it was a 3D animated family movie about an actual wolverine that got separated from its wolverine family. I'm splitting hairs, I know...

Anyone else find it ironic Aaron Paul's last shot in Breaking Bad had Jesse screaming down the road in a speeding car? When that scene came on I turned to the wife and said "He's got the need for speed!"

Well they may have taken some elements from the game, I don't know. Could be they took a script and re-wrote it a bit for this world, or they wrote it from scratch to make it for Need For Speed. I played only need for speed most wanted, and it was always about escaping the cops. At least they have that.

SOME SPOILERS - nothing you won't see coming

1. Very generic first couple plot points. Bank manager turns up… foreclosure on mechanics business. James Dean dies (I did say spoilers, didn't I?). Seriously though, it's so apparent it's going to happen.
2. I wouldn't bother seeing it in 3D, I took my glass off sometimes. Seemed a bit dark to me but that could be theatre specific.
3. Pinkerman carried the whole movie.
4. What was up with half the cast having greaser haircuts. Are they back?

Overall it was fun enough. A lenient 3/5.
