I have a job coming up that is a training seminar that lasts 6 or so hours a day. I am needing to get a lav kit for the instructor and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have done very little audio work myself, I know the basics, and I need to have just one guy on "set" at a time running cam and also recording sound directly onto camera which is stationary at the back of room. what sound equipment do I need? I have a sennheiser shotgun mic but I need a lav mic. should I be going wireless?

thanks for any input,
looking forward to the new audio dvd coming in the mail!

I can only say two words: NO WIRELESS! Easier said than done, some things require them, or you may THINK they do. But wireless is a pain - esp if you have little audio experience. First, MANY technical issues. 2nd, quality - unless you can shell out a few grand you will NOT get that great sound. You can run a wired mic for MUCH cheaper and get better quality than any wireless LAV that's 10 times more expensive.

I've used Countryman's EMW wired LAVs, for around $200, the quality is far superior than ANY wireless LAV NEAR that price range (which is 500 min for G2 Senns wireless) and those are scrapping the bottom (if you want near professional quality) The Countryman's I've used for some corporate stuff too, I also like Sanken COS-11X (hard-wired) for around well, 400 if feel the need to go more expensive but, the Countryman's are good for most anything imo. Sankens are really small and hides under clothes wonderfully, but so do the Countryman's. Also Sankens is omni-directional or the one I said. Well most LAVS will be omni, really doesn't make a difference makes it easier to pick the sound up as directional LAVs need to be pointed a certain way and many times that's not the way you need em to be pointed!

There are other wired LAVs for under 500 dollars that are better than 4000 wireless ones (imo) or at least can come close. I mean yeah wireless can sound much better past 3500 or so but it's so expensive to get to those results. It's a catch-22 with wireless. So, check about wired, extra cables lying around always make things interesting anyways I say!
