I'm looking to put together a dvx camera package.
I want to spend less than ten grand. Where is the best place in L.A to go.
I need: matte box, follow focus, tripod capable of handling 18pds, filters lenses, hoodman, and anything else that i can afford. I am limited on cash, wanted to wait for the hvx but 10 grand isn't going to go very far. Any info on what is necessary for my package would be greatly appreciated.

well EVS is a good place to start.. they have a special DVXuser member discount that will make your money last longer, and Rush over at EVS is a regular member here and can answer all your questions pre and post sale.

I'm just curious why everyone seems to feel they HAVE GOT TO HAVE a mattbox and follow focus to start producing really good stuff. Granted, I don't do much "indie film" stuff, most of my work is industrial and commercial stuff. And I understand the importance of the mattbox for blocking reflections and for filter usage but I've managed pretty well without one so far. And a follow focus on a 1/3" DV camera that for the most part has a DOF of 20 gazillion feet unless you are at the long end of the lens..... just seems a waste to me.
Maybe just because it looks killer? Seems like that $1k-$1.5k could be spent on better things... Just my .02cents worth.

BTW - RUSH at EVS is the man.

Thanks Sirius!

Well, aside from the coolness factor (and enlarging a fairly compact camera), I think it is because it increases the ergonomics by using a whip and extending it back towards the shooter, or towards the focus puller on the side (in case of a dolly shot, for ex.) The whip minimizes the amount of shake introduced into the camera body by the focus puller. Also it gives the puller specific marks to hit during the course of the shot. focus rigs are ungodly expensive though, because you still have to buy the baseplate/rods and focus ring. $2100 easy. I think that is because the demand for them is so low, that all the parts are still handmade. But that makes them last forever...

Focus rigs for full size cameras are much cheaper, because the lens dynamics and connections are already there on the ENG lens. You just need a focus block and a whip. $600. Smaller cameras essentially have to be treated like 16mm Film cameras, where everything comes in on 15mm rods.:cheesy:

Yea, the craftsmanship on those chrosziel ones (I've only seen pics) looks beautifal. Combine it with a matte box, and it just looks kick ass! I agree with the ergonimics...

If you are doing stuff for the big screen, even the enormous dof of the 1/3" chip can require precise focus. It really shows. And it's worse, since things don't become out of focus, but barely in focus, wich is uglier sill...

I had recently gotten a follow focus for my Z1 and could not believe how much smoother it is....it really helps with the whip for the DP.
