Need BIG TIME HELP selecting microphones

I need some “sound” advice from a sound expert. I am hoping to get a consensus here since the recommendations I’ve read seem to cut across a wide range of options.

I have just purchased a DVX100A and DV Rack. From all that I’ve read in this and other forums I am under the impression that the use of the mic that is built into the camera should be avoided in most situations.

I will be shooting mostly interviews and making training videos. I also suspect that most of the time I will be a one man show, that is, I will have to do everything from monitoring sound to manning the camera.

I have around $500 to spend on the sound equipment, or maybe a bit more if it really makes a difference in the quality.

1. From what I’ve read it appears as though I should invest in a shotgun mic, one that has a cardioid pickup pattern.

a. what brand / model would you suggest?
b. what type of cardioid pattern would be best? hyper? , ….

2. It appears that the shotgun mic should be affixed within some type of shock mounting. Here I am totally at a loss as to what to look for.

a. what brand / model would you suggest?
b. What type of support/boom should I consider.

3. Is there a specific brand/model of headset that I should consider for monitoring the sound?

4. I am also under the impression that I should not try to get by with just one mic, so I have been considering 1 or 2 lavs. I believe a good wireless lav in the UHF range would be beyond my budget so it appears as though I will have to get a wired model.

a. what brand / model would you suggest?
b. are there pickup patterns with lavs of which I should be aware?

5. From what I’ve read on this forum, it appears that as a one man show I should not even consider buying a mixer. Besides, it appears that DV Rack may be able to handle that aspect of sound for me, if needed. Is this true?

6. Now that I’ve look at all the requirements it appears as though maybe $500 may not be enough. Or is it?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Re: Need BIG TIME HELP selecting microphones

look for used ones - for new one you have to put at least 2 times more

Re: Need BIG TIME HELP selecting microphones

1. Not knowing where or what you are shooting....try a Oktava 012 for indoors

2. Lightwave Mini-Mount. Also pick up a mic stand to get mic over interviewee

3. Sony 7509

4. Tram 50

5. You will still need to check your levels with DVRack. It can't help you there.

6. Think the above is about $700 with some XLR cables.

The above will allow you to get indoor sit-down audio. There is a reason production teams almost alway have an audio guy. If this is a paid production video, get yourself a 2nd man and more equipment then the stuff you asked about. If you turn in a product with mediocre to poor sound, you are not likely to get hired again.

Re: Need BIG TIME HELP selecting microphones

Hey djkoz,
wabbit suggested getting the sony 7509 headphones but with that setup $200 for headphones is overkill if you ask me (unless you can find them used ....... yuck) !
Try the Sony 7506 or the Sennheiser hd280. both you can find for under $100 new.
I agree on the oktava mk012, I love mine but I learned that you need a good shockmount for this and a windscreen (even indoors) If you're shooting outdoors at all you'll need a REALLY good windscreen, I'm going to assume this will all be indoors.
  So ...
  $100  headphones
$200  oktava mk012 with capsules (you'll want the hyper and cardiod)
$150  for a decent windscreen and shockmount.
$75 for xlr cable and boom stand
= $525 for an exceptional setup that I think would suit you fine for interviews and training videos.

I'm no expert, so take it for what its worth, I've gone through this entire audio forum (all 34 pages) and Matt in STL has some nice mic comparison clips towards the beginning of this forum. pages 30 - 34.

Hope this simplifies things.

Caveman, where did you get your octava? I'm thinking about picking up one as an extra... Thanks!

Re: Need BIG TIME HELP selecting microphones

ptalsky,
I got one from a friend ($30!!!!!) and the other I bought from guitar center (thoroughly tested on my dvx of course!). Comparitively speaking they do sound a little different. Maybe it's me but when they're mixed together in post I can't tell at all. They just blend together well.
