Need Audio Help Badly

ok, i have a pretty lame problem. i need audio hook ups for my dvx whether it be adapters or an audio box. the problem is that i have this mic. i dont know if its the top of the line, but either way its better than on camera audio. the problem is that the mic doesnt have an xlr hook up. it uses a 1/8, or 3.5mm (headphone) output and i want to find an adapter to take that to an XLR that will fit my dvx. i do understand that with each adapter i lose quality but it is still better than on the camera. any help is widely appreciated!!! thanks in advance!!

If it's not an xlr, then it's probably something like an ATR 55. You are right about it not being top of the line, but they are a step up from the on camera mic.

You can get those adapters at Radio Shack. If not a single one to go from 1/8 to XLR, you can go from 1/8-1/4, then go from 1/4 to xlr. Both of those are pretty common adapters.

Sorry, my bad. The one you showed was the 3 pin XLR. If you had that, then a female 1/4 to female 1/8 adapter, that would work.

You can always bring the camera and mic to an electronics store and ask for help if you need to.

Ugh... how could you have a camera as nice as a DVX and then neuter the audio section like that? Do you know how many VX2100 and PD170 users are banned from the great audio of the DVX... in part because they lack the proper XLR interface and mic-pre?

That's like needing an adapter to hook your VHS tape player up to your new plasma tv's HDMI input.

But hey... you're not alone... several people on these boards are using mini-jack mics with their DVX's... although I'm stunned every time I hear about it. I'm not bashing your gear... but I'd start putting a little cash aside so that you can take advantage of the surprisingly good audio that the DVX is capable of producing.

I used an ATR 55 on my first shoot with my DVX (with an adapter). The sound was so much better than the on camera mic that I could not understand why anyone would need more. Then I heard an 897, a 4073, and a Senn 416.

I upgraded immediately. But you work with what you have.

Butt yeah Matt, the sound on the DVX is really good. Not using a good mic seems almost tragic :kali:

first, thank you all for your replies! i managed to get the right one in the nick of time.

lol ya MattinSTL, i completely understand what you are saying. unfortunately i am taking 17 units (1 and a half full time job equivalent) and doing paid scriptwriting work. with that i'm saving up for at least a redrock or SG pro. i am putting cash into my gear, so far i saved up enough on my own for a dvx. lol im getting there slowly but surely. Thank you all once again for your help and advise, and also to a great forum. hope you all have a wonderful day!!! peace

A friendly suggestion for people trying to piece together gear slowly; audio equipment has a much longer life span before it becomes obsolete then video.

Something to keep in mind when planning your equipment purchases.

Cheers

Amen Wabbit!

Unless it breaks, a good mic now is a good mic forever. Same with a preamp.
